YAQT:The mumps

So this is regarding my girlfriend being quarantined.

Well, it turns out that my GF is under suspicion of having the mumps (the only official case in the county~!), and cannot go out in public for 9 days - compounding the problem is that she lives in a studio apartment, where she would get stircrazy.

I've had my shots with the mumps, so I'm not worried - question is, what can she do to occupy herself? I'm in the process of looking for a place in town (I live over two hours away from her) so she can't come over to my place.

Now, being that many of us, yes I'm counting myself and my GF, are nerds who've perfected the art of staying indoors 24/7/365, what are some things to do that she can occupy herself with, either with me (over the weekend), or alone?

ps - I'm bringing down my XBox (not 360) with hundreds of games (literally - don't ask) but she's not much of a gamer, and books and movies can hold you out for only so long - any advice?

Wow...tell her that we hope that it's NOT the mumps. Grab some puzzle books (like crosswrods, find-a-words, etc.), magazines, and possibly some novels for her.

Hmmm, I wonder when was the last time I had my shots taken.
I don't want to get quarantined for 9 days! I'd probably play CS:S + other games all day and eat a ton of ramen. :D

Mumps causes the saliva glands on the side of your face to swell up.
probably makes it pretty hard to eat due to the swelling....

Midwest?

I had mumps a long time ago, as a kid - before the vaccine was invented. It hurt like crazy. My neck, face etc was all swollen and for a while I couldn't eat or drink anything, I remember people trying to force ice chips in my mouth.

I lost my hearing in my left ear permanently as a result.

Most of my friends had the mumps back then - one of those diseases everybody got - but most weren't very sick.

Wishing your girlfriend a very mild case.

Once you get vaccinated, you can't get it can you, or do you need booster shots? (I know I got it when I was a youngen)

For guys that have gotten mumps, there's a chance mumps may cause sterility, as well as increasing one's chances of developing testicular cancer. Just something to keep in mind...

actually...

the mumps vaccine isn't 100% effective in preventing you from getting the mumps (I think it's more like around 90% if you received 2 shots, and around 80% if you only received one shot), and the efficacy of the vaccine can wane over time

so you should still be cautious

Your girlfriend doesn't happen to be that woman at the Georgia Institute of Technology that was diagnosed today, was she?
