Unfortunately, that's the way it works.

You cannot deny him medical. I'm sure the same thing repeats all across the country everyday, it's not just here in Oregon.

Christ.... 120k/year for the state to keep him on dialysis.

That's just sad.

I don't think the state should have to pay for it, although I guess there isn't any other way considering he can't make his own money.

Wish we could..

Unfortunately, the state would probably end up being sued if that were to happen.

After the recent passage of 26-48 in Multnomah county, and the ongoing corruption of the state budget in Oregon, I am making plans on leaving the state within the next year.

Why is 26-48 a bad thing?

You can't have it both ways....

Just across the Columbia to the good 'ol 'Couv.
Hey, at least WA state doesn't drastically cut school funding while still guaranteeing the right of illegal immigrants to get free health care.

I know that a lot of people with good intentions were in favor of 26-48, but I have a feeling that it will end up being one of the worst things to ever happen to Portland. First, there is no such thing as a temporary tax. This tax will be permanent. Second, the state will steal the money, if only by cutting even more funding to the city and county, and Portland will be worse off than before. And finally, by gambling that they could get people to pay more in taxes by cutting necessary services like schools (without cutting funding to any bureaucratic fat or unpopular programs), state officials brought very negative national press attention to Portland. You can now be very certain that the big population influx that had kept our economy booming for the last 12 years is now officially over. No one wants to move to Oregon anymore, and lots of people are planning on moving out. Did you know that the state had itself exempted from the federal tax code this month? That they are planning on doing away with normal tax deductions like those for mortgage interest, charitable donations, and medical costs?

"WTF is wrong with Oregon officials?" A lot more than this minor kidney transplant issue, I can tell you that.

When we buy our first house we're also looking at the Vancouver/Battle Ground area.

Have what both ways? Like how the original Oregon Lottery charter required that 100% of its profits go to schools, and yet only ~40% go to schools now? Like how Multnomah county property taxes for schools go to Salem, never to return to our schools? Like how the state spends hundreds of millions of dollars for the Oregon Health Plan for illegal immigrants? Like how Portland Public Schools has to spend almost $9,000 per student per year for a crappy education but you could send your kid to any of the area's top private schools for less than $7,000 per year and your kid would get a great education?
Need I go on? This just the tip of the iceberg. Open your eyes.

I'll bet that you will still come to Oregon for most of your shopping! (no Sales Tax)

It's to bad that we let people sit for decades on Death Row, but then it is to bad that we cannot be sure that the people on Death row belong there! Until we can guarentee that an innocent person will not be executed I will not be a supporter of the death penality.
