I really want one too.

But there is a problem.

My apartment complex charges $250 annually + $25/month for a pets :|

I pay frickin $510/month for a 1 bedroom apartment in this college town, and yet they are trying to screw you over more :(

Do any of you live in an apartment, have a pet, but don't pay (assuming you have to) pet deposit?

Do maintenance people usually check if the renter pays pet deposit or no? I am guessing they don't since they have lots of other problems to worry about but oh well, I don't wanna get charged $500 if I get caught with it :(

i used to hate cats, and one day my g/f brought in a stray kitten. i immediately told her to get that tiny ass thing out of my room, but after about a week i feel in love w/ her - she's a great companion. i'd pay that amount and more to be able to keep my cat, although it's different when you don't have the attachment yet and you're debating whether or not to get a pet. you could always skip out on the payment and if you get "caught" just say that you were cat-sitting for a friend.

Sounds like they're trying to avoid as much as possible, having their units infested with fleas, smelling like cat piss and having crap all over the lawn. Just a hunch...

I have 2 cats and don't pay an extra dime.

However, I'm paying $735 a month anyway so, the complex managers try not to piss me off.

(That and I get a little surly, sometimes. ;) )

I have to pay a deposit for each cat (I have 2) when I lived in an apartment, but never a monthly or annual fee.

Stop complaining. I pay 750 for a 1 bedroom apartment here and you can go up to 1100 in the area. God damn Davis. But yea, we just have to put down an additional 250 deposit, but we don't have to pay like how you said it.

I've got a nice pussy on my lap as I am typing this.

We've had our cat for several years now, and as he has gotten older, he has become uber lazy. He either sleeps or stares out of the window for 23.5 hours of the day, then for the remaining half hour he eats. Recently he started to hop onto my lap while I'm at the computer, which is nice because we keep each other warm (it's fricken freezing in my basement where my comp is).

Well, I really would pay the deposit, because I know I am going to love my cat when I get it... I had cats before and I just can have a very special connection with almost any cat. However, when I am struggling to pay tution for college, I just can't afford the deposits, etc. since I want to spend my money on quality food for her.

Yeah I know :|

250 + 12(25) = $550 (Non-refundable) :|

Grrr.....

I guess I can get my cat and tell them I was cat-sitting for a friend if I get caught.

Yup, here too. $900 for a 2 bedroom, think my cat deposit was $300 or something like that.

I just snuck mine in at night under cover of a blanket and they never noticed for the year I had it there. Everyone else in the building had cats too and I was a good little tenant so the managers never paid me any visits. My cat didn't piss on the rug or shred anything though.

Xiety, here at Windsor Hills (yes, i'm in blacksburg), its also $250 annually and $25 a month for my cat. Its a PITA... but I've always done it. I've heard of some people going without paying--but I also know a few that have been caught... and $500 is the easiest thing that can happen (I've seen evictions from condos where the owners are anti-pet).

I understand your pain, however--it pisses me off to know how much i pay per year just for the cat. Note that it varies a LOT... even in the same area. Foxridge is a $300 deposit, half of which is returned at the end of the lease, with no monthly rent (for a cat).

well, mine is a tiny 1 bedroom place without dishwasher/washer/dryer and uses electric heat, so I think the rent price is right :)

Oh well, I will talk to my neighbours, they have cats, I'll see what they say.

cheers.

Hey ESM,

Good to hear from another Hokie ;)

Well, I am at Terrace View. Although they are generally good with everything else, the pet deposit is crazy...

I don't know what I want to do... most of the time, management gives a notice if anyone is going to come over to do work, but sometimes they won't.

Bah, I wish I was out of school and had a high-paying job :D Isn't that what we all want? ;)

I would advise against it. It would be a shame for the cat to get attached to you and vice versa and then someone discover it and make you get rid of it. I'd recommend waiting until you move into a pet friendlier environment.

I rented an apartment from the owner of the house. We agreed on no pets, but I found a mommy and her two babies in desperate for a home or they would be put down. So, I took them temporarily. When my landlord saw then, I denied they were mine and that I was just kittysitting. She knew, but the place was immaculate and I did all the maintenience and upkeep on the house as if i own it, so she did not say anything.

When I met my b/f he wanted me to move 1,000 miles to be with him. We looked all over for a place but NO ONE would rent to me with three cats. So, in one day, he found a house paid for it cash and now I have TWELEVE cats. Eight of them are indoor/outdoor models and only come home for bed and brerakfast and spend the rest of the time in the backyard and garage.

I love them and if I had a large amount of property, I would go to my local shelter and take every animal there and give them a home!

:)

we take all the ones that are homeless, neglected and mistreated. We pay out of pocket to get them healthy, fixed and they all get 3 vaccinations a year. We try to find them homes. The ones that no one will take (missing tails or paws or too old or distressed live here forever. I have quite a crew.

It costs us between $275.-400 a month for food vet bills, toys etc. A bargain ay twice the price. I adore every one of them. We placed 8 cats and two dogs this year!

$250. one time fee is kewl. They will have to shampoo or replace the carpets when you leave. $25.00 a month in rent in an insult.
