After the van has sat for a while, I have trouble getting the car into gear.
It used to be, to get the van into any gear, I would have to shift all the way down to L1, feel the vehicle thrust forward a bit, then I could go forward or in reverse.

Lately in the afternoons, since the temps have been in the 60's and 70's, that trick doesn't seem to work. I just have to wait a minute or so until it finally thrusts into gear.

Any idea what is going on?

Also, there is a sharp cloverleaf on-ramp on my route home from work. Sometimes, after getting onto the interstate there, the van will stick in second gear. It's a major pain in the ass, because the on-ramp is followed by an offramp less than 1/4 mile (totally unsafe anyway) but when it sticks in 2nd, it's hard to pick up speed fast enough.

My grandfather's 1994 LeSabre has done this for a few years...still working though.

Only thing you can do is check the fluid level and also the quality of it. How many miles?

Has the fluid and screen/filter ever been changed? It's possible that they filter/screen are so plugged up they pump can't provide enough pressure to shift the tranny.

Service it.

If that doesen't fix or at least help it, there isn't much you can do, and it will require a complete overhaul.

That's the only thing I don't like about automatic transmissions. They're so much more complex[than a manual], there is much more to go wrong.

At least with a manual, you can "deal" with most problems until it's so worn out it just won't stay in gear anymore, heh.
