Heh, this thread reminds me of the first pane of this comic. The only reason I can think of to get a PS3 is MGS4, and I don't like it *that* much.

As long as the Playstation sequels allow me to go back and play Final Fantasy Tactics and Colony Wars and Sony is the receiver of the Final Fantasy series, it's an easy choice for me.

If Square went back to the old Final Fantasy feel, I'd be all over it. The fact is, even playing today, I still *hate* Kefka. I still feel bad for Cecil. I still feel kind of sad when Aeris dies.

Every Final Fantasy game after 8 just does nothing for me. I don't feel any soul in them any more.

Yep.

Need to see more specs on this though because they worded it to sound like HD-DVD movies would be shown natively at 1080p.
from what i understood, the xbox360 would support native 1080p from content that was recorded/created in 1080p. they mention "upscalling to 1080p" because current 360 games (as well as DVDs) aren't developed in 1080p and would therefore need to be upscaled.

Yep, pretty much the same as the PS3. That takes away Sony's big selling point.

OMG! You mean there won't be backwards compatability with older Playstations or a Blue-Ray player now?

Backwards compatability is not the big selling point that Sony is pushing and MS already matched the PS3 with HD-DVD.

I don't see them as equal. HD-DVD won't be installed on but a fraction of XBOX360s for quite a while.

Even after they arrive as standard equipment, they won't be any better than the SegaCD. There won't be a lot of exclusive content because devs won't want to fragment the userbase.

It will be nothing like the SegaCD. The HD-DVD drive will be for movies only. MS has let it be known time and again that games will not be developed for HD-DVD. HD-DVD is for movies only and gives consumers the option of whether they want it or not.

Sounds great to me. Makes me 100x more likely to buy a 1080p display now once I get around to buying a new HDTV.

I'm not sold that I actually care about HD-DVD or Blue Ray at the moment...but upscaling my DVD's will be great and upscaling the games will be nothing short of fantastic as well.

And who cares about backwards compatability. Did you throw out your old console? People make such a huge stink over that and I venture to guess that 99% of gamers really don't care.

Man, looks like another format Sony is going to lose. HD-DVD looks like the pick now, surprising as just a year ago, everybody in the industry was saying Blu-ray was the winner. With cheaper movies than Blu-ray, BETTER quality, more selection, and cheaper players, Blu-Ray doesn't stand a chance.

1080P on the 360 is awesome too. I'm soooo glad i got the 42" Westinghouse now. The only thing that concerns me is games at actual 1080P. That's going to require a lot more horsepower than 720P.

I can see some XBLA games at 1080p. Those are simpler games that should be able to display it ok. MS has stated that all first party games will be 720p because that is what they consider the "sweet spot" of HD gaming. They are giving 3rd party developers the option of which resolution they develop their games at.

Sony has been showing off Virtua Tennis 3 at 1080p and I'm not all that impressed from the screenshots. The environment and player models don't look all that improved. Resistance: Fall of Man and other PS3 games running at 720p look better.

It's up for debate how much 1080p will even matter for gaming. As of now only Gran Turismo HD presumably supports 1080p but it's unclear to me if it's an actual game or just a tech demo. Some sony dev stated that there's frame-rate issues with 1080p and that all we're getting is 720p for now.

What will look nice are 720p games upscaled to 1080p. This will not take any processing power away from the games (the scaling should be handled by a separate portion of the graphics subsystem). This will be like a DVD being scaled to HDTV...definitely a nice improvment (although with much less impact since the jump is much smaller going from 720p to 1080p).

All while I hug my 1080p Sceptre.

I spent $1600 on my 1080i HDTV three years ago. 1080p ain't worth it until my current TV breaks.

parity (countable and uncountable; plural parities)
Singular
parity
Plural
countable and uncountable; parities
1. (uncountable) equal; even; of comparable strength or intensity

No, the 'p' should stand for progressive (as opposed to 'i' for interlaced)

I took the parity thing as little wordplay by the author and I think that's what theNEOone was implying too.

Anyhow, I'd rather have an upgrade that made all Xbox games backward compatible, or juts some decent 360 games would do. Quality of gameplay>resolution.
Jesus Christ people... it's sarcasm.

Of course they are not equal. The reason being: MS gives you a CHOICE. Do I want to buy the HD player? No? Well, cool because now I don't have to since it is a separate transaction. However, Sony has forced their technology upon you and now you get to pay a premium for it whether you have a 19" crapper TV or a greatest TV ever 1080P set.

This info is confusing at best.

They will scale the internal 720P to 1080P and call it 1080P? Over component? What about VGA cable users who are limited to 1378x768? What about people who cannot do 1080P via component? It's sounds like marketing FUD to try to steal Sony's thunder. The PS3 is doing real 1080P via HDMI, a digital cable. Blu-ray isn't upscaled crap, it's real 1080P. Nice try MS.

Nobody complained when the PS2 / XBOX came with DVD instead of CD drives. I see this as the same.

Even if Blu-Ray fails as a movie format, at least the system will be able to make use of massive ammounts of storage.

I think Blu-Ray is a great choice for a storage medium that happens to synergize well with other Sony marketing efforts. It's just tragic that they have so many delays with it.
