I am facing this dilemma right now for law school; I've grown up in this area (Seattle) for my entire life. My mom and most of my extended family live within an hour's drive, my two closest friends live within ten minutes, most of my family friends within an hour. You get the idea.
My father, stepmother and sister all live in SoCal (LA and Santa Barbara), and I am looking at UC Davis and Hastings, but even those are a ways away from anyone I know.
Looking at my top choices, I'm looking at Virginia, Georgia, or the Northeast. I don't know anyone in those areas, besides a few isolated friends of my parents.
It's very daunting. I am an introverted person, very used to having long-term friends. Even now, in my third year of college, most of my social time is spent with my close friends from h.s. and earlier. Not to mention getting to know an entirely different section of the country, different laws, customs, social mores, etc.
I am tempted to take the easy way out and just go to Seattle University (ranked 91), which I would have no difficulty getting into, or the Univ. of Washington (20-40% chance of acceptance)... but neither of these are the wise course to take.
Bah. What are you supposed to do?
