Yao Ming shopping for a bicycle

There's an article on him in this month's Bicycling magazine with that picture.

Supposedly, the first thing he asked for when he signed for the Rockets in 2002 was a bike. They gave him a 31 inch Gunnar rockhound with 29 inch wheels.

Gunnar owner Richard Schwinn joked that the bike helps offset the U.S trade deficit: "We're probably the only American bike company who can say we've sent a bike to China"

You are correct. This is not uncommon on very large bikes, which are prone to being jittery at high speeds because of frame flex/vibration.

Although I prefer steel for most applications, I have to question the wisdom of building an MTB for a 7'6" man out of steel - this thing must be incredibly heavy.
