YANYSDMVT: Does NY DMV suck?

I just bought a car off of my grandfather. I'm off to the DMV in half an hour to register it. It seems no matter what time or day I go, there's always a 3 hour wait. It also looks like half of the employees are just standing around.

I'm glad I downloaded tetris on my cell phone.

At least they don't run cheery commercials saying how wonderful the new, improved DMV is, like New Jersey does.

LOL both suck equivalently though maybe NY slightly less because they have digitized licenses. My wife still has a NJ license with no picture while I need to carry 2 licenses because one is an extension license.

A little off topic but I remember one funny experience I had at the NYC DMV near Chinatown. I was waiting hours to get my license and there was this gorgeous looking blonde woman ahead of me. When she finally turned around she had a beautiful face but was completely cross-eyed. It really freaked me out.

tip: go near the end of the day. they have to process you but they really want to get the fvck out of there so they will work much faster than they normally do.

My local one isn't too bad..

But, the women who work there are, without a doubt, the bitchiest females I've met in my life. I've never run across a group of individuals who have worse personalities. I don't know if the job made them that way or they were like that when they were hired.

If faced with the moral dilemma - I can either save one of my dogs or the entire group from the DMV office, I wouldn't even have to pause to consider. At least my dogs are happy to see me when I get to the door. They just scowl when you walk up to their window.

Wisconsin's DMV Sux totally also....The average wait is 3 hours. The move like they are in slow motion and the only time they crack a smile is if they are passing gas.

I tried that. I even got there 15 minutes early. There was a decent sized line already. You would have thought these people were camping out for concert tickets. When we finally get inside, there's 1 person working and a few sitting around. Everyone's in slo-mo .. they mustn't have had their first coffee break yet.

2 hour wait.

New York State DMV's are the worst. In Suffolk County, Long Island, it would take my parents a half day to a whole day to transact any kind of business there.

When we moved to Ohio, we were surprised that it only took about 20 minutes to get anything done at the DMV.

PA was pretty good since most things didn't need done at the DMV. Title transfers and new plates could be handled at a notary or a tag service place. basically just had to hit the DMV for a new license every 4 years or so.

All DMVs suck. I've found out a few rules:
1) Don't go in the last week of the month. Everyone is coming in to meet monthly deadlines.
2) Don't go on a Friday. Everyone trys to take Friday off for a 3 day weekend and goes to the DMV on that day.
3) Don't go in the afternoon. No one wants to get up early to go to the DMV so the mad rush is in the afternoon. Plus you have people coming in after school and after work.
4) During the school year, don't go right in the morning. All the school kids just turning the right age rush in before school to get their license/learner's permit.

Do all those 4 things and a 3 hour wait becomes a 15 minute wait.

In California (and probably other states), the AAA office has a DMV within it which is available to all members. Made it VERY simple when my mom transferred the car title to me with the handling of the insurance and DMV stuff all in one building and with no lines to wait in.

My experience was in the burbs, but in the city, it's mad fast. Want to renew your license ? They have a specific window for it. They process about 10+ people every 5 minutes.
