i guess it's because he only performs when there is nothing at stake.

Not true about the only one producing. Sheffield has played pretty well, as has Jeter. Arod isn't really producing as well as his numbers show; about half of his rbis and HRs come from 2 games!

Edit: didn't realise that the above is an emoticon if the colon is followed by the pipe... oops.

what's interesting is: people don't seem to have noticed that the downfall of the 90's yankees with 4 championships was George Steinbrenner getting back in control of the franchise. as he started spending more and more money in the late 90's the team got worse and worse.

fact is, there is no better way to develop a franchise than to do it from the ground up.

then why do all yankees fans defend george for spending all that money? not only does it not win you championships, it makes the rest of MLB less interesting as well.

Just sad that they're playing like garbage. BTW, if you have a problem with the Yankees spending money, perhaps you should complain to MLB and the players union; the Yankees are just playing within the limits (or lack there of) set up by the league.

Umm, I defend his right to spend whatever amount of money he wants to in baseball, as there's nothing illegal about it. However, I do not think he has spent it wisely, nor has he needed to spend as much as he has.
