Yank exchange students seem to be inseperable from their luminous 'nalgenes' and bottled water...

Gotta rehydrate during the day so you can drink more alcohol at night! ;)

trendy plastic bottles that were originally lab equipment until someone figured out that being basically indestructible and almost exactly the right size to fit a water filter made them very handy for backpacking. College kids decided it was cool to strap them to their backpacks while "hiking" to class and wearing their "Ithaca is Gorges" tshirts. Basically it is an attempt by douchebags to try to look trendy. As someone who has actually backpacked, I try to hold back the urge to suckerpunch them in the face.

all the australians I hung around in Vancouver loved their nalgenes. I wouldn't stereotype; all students seem to use them.

You probably don't understand because you Aussies are all descended from prisoners. They don't give prisoners much water so you probably developed a tolerance for dehydration.

I'll stereotype who i want, when i want, how i want ;)

Maybe it's an exchange student thing? From the point of view of actually being an aussie student for five years, i can assure you that they don't carry them around at the UWA campus ;)

Are you sure these are yanks? If they are from the southern states you may offend them.

It's popular up here in Canada as well. And i know it's popular with kiwis. I'm surprised it's not popular in Australia.

Yep, all the trendy douchebags in Texas like them. A water bottle will suffice for me.

The problem with a lot of waterbottles is the plastic taste they can leave behind. And Nalgenes are almost indestructible. I knew somebody that had one for like 8 years.

Personally though, i just use empty gatorade bottles. They're lighter, cheap, and i get a bottle after every gatorade bottle i drink.

rofl

As for the topic at hand, never heard of nalgenes but water I drink all day long. Need something to restore the water used in processing the alcohol out. ;)

lets see: a 5$ bottle that is virtually indestructible... large capacity... leeches no plastics... adds no taste... and with a widemouth for EASY cleaning...

versus having to buy a 1$ aquafina when youre thirsty or look for a water fountain

nope, no logic to nalgenes at all.. its got to be for the trend factor

I guess they hadn't heard that popular opinion is now swinging towards the "bottled water is bad" point of view. Huge environmental costs, exploitation of the third-world countries, waste of fossil fuels (at least in the US) as 18-wheelers spew fumes hauling water around the country, while we have the highest quality tap water in the world on average.

One article.

They have heard it. You fill your nalgene yourself from the tap, so even though it's in a bottle I don't think it counts as "bottled" water.

I have a nalgene, but I mostly use water bottles meant for cycling. None of that troublesome removal of the cap. I just suck on the nipple like some kind of perverted, overgrown, hairy baby.

And yes, everyone here is terrified of dehydration.

Well, it's a little difficult carrying water in a cup around campus all day.

It's a great way to hide booze. You don't have to worry about getting sh!tfaced and breaking it.

I stopped buying them though because I kept losing them.

Same reason i did too. Go with the gatorade bottle! They're practically indestructible as well (and like i said, lighter).
