For all the people going back to school and for those who have kids going back to school...

This is a problem that was posed to an 8th grader so I HOPE that you mathematically inclined geniuses at ATOT can solve it quickly...

Question:

If a bottle and a glass balance with a pitcher, a bottle balances with a glass and a plate, and two pitchers balance with three plates, can you figure out how many glasses will balance with a bottle ?

Bottle+Glass=Pitcher
Bottle=Glass+Plate
2*Pitchers=3*Plates

Equation 1)&3)

2*Bottle+2*Glass=2*Pitcher=3*Plates

Equation 2)&Above)

3*Bottle=3*Glass+3*Plate=3*Glass+2*Bottle+2*Glass

Bottle=5*Glass

Do 8th graders know algebra?

I know the answer was already posted, so you'll have to take my word that I didn't read it.

b = bottle
g = glass
p = pitcher
l = plate

b+g=p
b=g+l
2p=3l

p = (3/2)l

b+g = (3/2)l
b = g + l

2g + l = (3/2)l
2g = (1/2)l

4g = l

b = 5g
