YAMT: Tonsils

I don't like my tonsils anymore.

I was really, really sick at the beginning of the summer. That was probably one of the worst illnesses I've ever experienced, and my doctor didn't know what it was (he listed it as "unspecified conjunctivitis"). My throat was purple, sore, and swollen to the point that I couldn't swallow. I lost my voice, and had constant head- and body aches. I won't even mention what was going on in my nose.

As a result of this illness, my tonsils took quite a beating. Now they are really nasty looking -- they're all eaten away. They used to be nice and smooth, but now they are really... well, nasty and furrowed. I can't really describe it, but it ain't pretty no more.

This week, I contracted strep throat for the first time in like six years. I'm wondering if it's due to my tonsils. Would it be worth it to have them taken out? I don't know the health risks associated with removing them, or even if the procedure would be beneficial in my case. I've just been mulling it over before I go to the doctor tomorrow.

What do you think?

Talk to your doctor about it, your tonsils should look ok though, unless you have an active infection...

Generally, unless you have recurrent infections, docs don't recommend removing them.

Too late, I already went to work on them with a paring knife... :Q

My tonsils should look okay, but they look very different since that illness. This strep is my first sickness since then, so that doesn't qualify as "recurrent". It's just weird that I should catch it.

I had mine removed a couple years ago. Not a very pleasant experience, but I have yet to get sick since. (used to get strep tonsillitis all the time)

When I was younger I got strep constantly. I'd never get colds or anything, just strep after strep. My doctor never recommended tonsillectomy (or however you spell it), though.

That's why I was surprised to get it again.

I had my Tonsils and Adenoids removed in my mid 20s. I really helped curb how often I got sick... and at first, helped with my sinuses and ears. But apparently my adenoids have grown back... a very rare thing to happen in an adult. I have to have them removed again because they are partially blocking my left nasal passage and playing hell with my sinuses and ears again. 🙁

Luckily, the adenoids are much less painful to have removed than the tonsils. But I'll still need a couple weeks to recover.

Having my tonsils out in my 20s was an extremely painful experience. After the first week, my Dr refused to give me any more pain meds so I started taking very large doses of ibuprofen. That gave me a very painful case of gastritis. Luckily, that didn't cause any permanent damage.

Sounds like cryptic tonsils. I just had mine removed last week. If it's just a matter of them being ugly, I wouldn't consider the surgery. It is not pleasant. It took me 9 days before I was able to swallow without enough pain to make me take the narcotic pain killer they gave me.
