YAMT: Sprained ankles

So I sprained/broke my ankle for the first time tonight. I have no experience with these kinds of injuries. On the outside of my foot (where it hurts the most) I have a swollen thing about the size of half of a golf ball just a bit below the ankle joint. Is this a normal reaction from a sprain?

I was playing basketball, landed on a guys foot, heard some popping (sounded like when I pop my joints, not like cracking), and my foot rolled to the inside. I can stand on it ok, and I hardly feel anything if I put all my weight on my heel. I can move my foot up/down a little bit but nowhere near as far as normal. Already took a couple Ibuprofin, and I'll go to the doc on Wednesday if it's still killing me by then. But that golf ball has me concerned.

My roommate stepped really bad on his ankle. I think he said two bones got mashed against each other in the ankle, and got roughened by the impact - in addition to a good old sprain. Looked like he had a tennis ball embedded in his ankle. Doctor is a good idea.
My roommate got a splint and crutches, but smartly never used them.😕
