Yet another mailbox thread...or is this a first?

Anyhow, we got a notice in our mailbox today saying that we have to lower it by 10-12 inches. Lower it? Huh? What a DUMB thing. The builders put it in and we never realized that it had to be at a particular height before...

Is the thing in cememt? How does one lower a mailbox? Bash it down with a rubber mallet or what? It is a really pretty black thing....I don't wanna have to rip everything up because our mailman has short arms...mailwoman...whatever!

You might want to call up the city and ask them the guidelines/rules regarding mailbox height, because if it's one of those bricked mailboxes, I'm sure the contractor knew the guidelines.
