YAMT: Gear selection, critique

Gloves- Held Akira Gloves
Black/Blue, Size 10

Boots- Sidi Strada Tepor Evo Boots
Size 46

Pants - FirstGear HT II Overpants-
Black, Size 34 Tall

Jacket - FirstGear Kilimanjaro 4.0 Jacket-
Black/Blue, Size Large

my needs: full daily gear, with most water protection incase i get caught in the rain. I know the gloves arent waterproof, but that i can be fine with, the rest are all water proof.

its about $50 more than i wanted to spend, but not bad at all, i know i need a helmet, but thats for me to try on, not positive need to make sure one fits properly.

other than that, any suggestions?

I thought you were going to talk about some computer gear gear.

I'd go with custom fitted leathers by VH out in California.

MIKEMIKE, I know you posted this on another board (don't remember which one). Just stick with the other boards, this one is kinda light on the cycle talk.

And when you find a good price on the Sidi boots, let me know.

i found those sidi boots for 220 over at newenough, which is $70 more than my original pair, but they look better, and might actually workk for me at work.

i posted over on TCL motorcycle forum.

What happened to the M3, GTO, and all of those other cars? Have you sold the Malibu yet? Are you still living with mommy and daddy?

pipe dreams, why would i sell it?, yes.

and i actually have the cash, on hand, to go purchase the bike and gear right now.

so, eat it, i never discussed the M3 with my parents, GTO got shot down or else i wouldnt be asking about a bike.

did i tell ya i went and got my temps for a motorcycle? yea, see this is more than a dream.

If you're spending that much on gear, it would be foolish IMHO not to get waterproof gloves, especially with winter right around the corner.

Do you have heated grips?

no, i wont ride in the winter, to much snow here, and i cant find any decent gloves that are good looking and water proof.

i may ride when thres no snow, and the roads are clean, but no where far, just practice stuff in the winter for when the spring comes i can be more prepared.

edit: the bike is a 1988 Honda Hawk GT.

So you ended up finding a Hawk GT then, that's great.

Those First Gear HT 2.0 Overpants are supposed to be pretty good textile overpants. That's what I plan on buying, I'm just waiting on a good deal since I'm in the same boat as you (new rider with winter coming on).

I don't know when it starts for your area, but if you want to get into an early MSF course next spring (probably too late this fall), you'll probably have to register as soon as you can. I really reccomend taking it, it made me feel WAY more comfortable on my bike after finishing the course. Since you're in Ohio like me, it will only run you $25. I'd have felt good paying 4X that for the course, it was amazing. Plus it exempts you from the road test when you go get your endorsement. I'm going Wednesday to get mine since my license expires that day.

What are you looking at for helmets, or do you have one already? When I signed up for the MSF course, I had no intentions of buying a bike until next spring, so I spent $60 on an Icon Alliance from NewEnough. Then I went out and bought a bike, so the helmet I originally bought to use for the MSF then as a loaner became my primary helmet. I'll probably pick up a Shoei RF1000 when I graduate and get a full time job.

bike is useless if rider dead.

Have an experienced rider get it home for you. That's what I did. I would have probably dropped the bike had I tried to ride it home after never having a leg over before.

LOL, its not like 50 mph on a hawk isnt equal to 50 mph on a busa...

and MrBond, they day i purchase it i plan on riding in their parking lot (its huge, theres a sams club connected to that parking lot, etc, for about 3-4 hours before i go home.

Woulda been easier if you had links, but for the boots at least, I'd save some money and get some Tour Master Solution road boots. Got a pair for the GF and she likes em more then when she tried on the Sidi's. I hear really good things about those overpants considering they can be really breezy or waterproof with the liner.

I personally think Held glove are overpriced now. They used to be the sh1t, but they're no better then other $150 gloves now. For 200, you can almost get two pairs of these marsee gloves. One pair for winter, one for summer.

If it snows where you are, those vented helds are going the freeze your hands off, so either get grip warmers or a good glove liner if you don't have winter gloves.

Nothing to say on the jacket.

I linked the Ohio site earlier - it's a little more complete. The MSF website doesn't list all the places that do it in Ohio.

It's getting late in the season for it, most of them only run through the end of October. I sent my check in on 8/30 and by that time they were full through the rest of the season. The lady called me later saying there was a cancellation and I ended up getting in the last weekend of September.

It seems like getting in as a walk-on would be pretty easy, we had one open spot for the classroom session because someone didn't show up.

You really cannot get better than Aerostich for all season/weather riding. I also have the BMW Gore-Tex enduro boots and Gore-tex summer & winter riding gloves.

Whatever you get, spend what it takes. You will never hear anyone who rides say they wish they had spent less on gear.

i cant afford aerostitch right now, its an additional like $300 over what i have currently.

i was looking, but first gear is supposed to be great as well.

as for MSF, i dont have it yet, and i will have a private lesson in the spring as the person i am buying the bike from where he works, they give msf courses privately to those who purchase in early april from the head msf instructor in my area of ohio. so i think i will do that, and just practice, no long riding, in the fall/winter times.
