YAMT: Friday Night Lights

We rented this last night. Not too bad!! I got pretty ticked off when they didn't get the winning TD at the end, but I understand movies nowadays can't all have happy endings - that gets old real quick I guess. I felt the cast did a pretty good job considering there were no huge names except for Billy Bob. He was fairly decent in that role but he seemed to be wearing a ton of makeup! As far as football movies go though, it was much better than Varisty Blues imho and just as good as Any Given Sunday. Comments?

Well I guess I found it funny because the guy that wrote the book decided to follow the team for that one season. And they lose just like that, its based on a true story, they couldn't have them win. What happens the next season, they go undefeated to win the championship. Go figure.

yeah, guy picked the wrong year to follow them.

leads to a 'tragic' book. I loved the movie, mostly because I wanted to see how Bill Bob potrayed coach Gary Gaines.. About 10 years after the movie was made, he moved to San Angelo, where I live and was my coach through my high school football years, and I have great respect for him. we never went to the finals, but he took us from a last place team before I got to h.s., to us winning 2 division championships, both years promptly wiped out in the 1st round by Midland Lee. we couldn't stop Cedric Benson

That is uber cool that you have a personal connection! Wow, can you tell us a little tidbit more of what high school football is like at that level? I bet some of the high school teams down south would mop up Canadian University teams with ease. It amazes me how good some of the talent is at that level!

well here in san angelo, we don't exactly have a storied history like Midland Lee, Odessa Permia, etc. only a couple state championships I think in the 50's or something. but regardless out here yes high school football is life. We have a beautiful huge stadium here for our team. oh, and we also let the Division II college team borrow it sometimes 😛

for the past, well forever our school was in the same district as abilene, midland and odessa teams which are featured in the movie. storied battles. then for some reason, my junior year and first varsity year, we were switched to a different division, with amarillo and lubbock. We managed to mop the floor with these guys in division play, but were no match for Lee back then with Cedric who will likely go top 3 in NFL raft. those 2 years they knocked us out of the playoffs, they went on to undefeated state championship seasons.

have to also mention my senior year, we played Lee during the regular season before rematching them in the playoffs. they had a star senior defensive end who was division 1 prospect. I was so fiercely pissed at how bad they were whipping us.. I played offensive line, guard. pass play, 3rd and long pinned behind our 20. this end has been giving our sophomore tackle hell all night. this play calls for me to drop back for blitz, then bounce out to double with the tackle. well our tackle had this guy stood up but he was penetrating towards the qb. I dove right at this guy's left knee with everything I had, blatant personal foul. but I took him out for the season. yeah i played dirty whenever possible. cost me recognition for all district when all the coaches saw the films.

anyway coach Gaines was an interesting guy and despite any outsiders looking in he had the respect of his players.
