which one is a better cost/value and will last longer?
i have experienced th yamaha x8x4x24 which lasted for 4 years...
the speed is less important, i care more for reliability.
and is there some cd protection one of them can burn and the other cannot?

thanks,
eggplant

I personally do not have any experience w/ Plextor, however I have heard nothing but great things about them.

I do own a Yamaha CDRW-F1 and its a great drive. If you're not interested in the DiscT@2 then I'd go w/ which ever drive is cheaper as both would be blazingly fast. Also the Yamaha has 8MB buffer where the Plex has 2, I think.

But like I said, if you're not interested in using any of the Yamaha specific features then just go for the cheaper... I dont know about the Plex but I saw an add @ BB for the Yamaha for 149 after rebates... still expensive but its at least starting to come down.

I think if you are going for reliability, you can't go wrong with either... if one is better to the other, i'd give the SLIGHT edge to Plextor cause I do know they last long. but they are both good.. (I know people who have had both.) I am a Ricoh owner myself and I like them alot too.

thanks alot!

just for the reccored the plex has 4 mb buffer...

and the price is less an issue as i planed to buy the cdrw where i live (israel) but i'll buy it in singapure instead so it'll be cheaper anyways..

btw- do you know if the prices in singapure are similar to the prices in the us?

thanks again,

ehh... that I have no idea about. Thanks for the clarification about the buffer on the Plex. Like i stated above... go w/ whatever is cheaper. Also if you're interested in software the Plex I beleive comes w/ EZ CD Creator where the Yamaha comes w/ Nero 5.5x... dont know if that matters to you but i thought i'd tell you anyway.

ok thanks, one last question: is it true i can't write faster than X16 and lower than X44 on a CDR? (with the F1)
becuase in the reviews i read so...

you cannot phisically change the write speed to anything else but like 4 levels... dont remember the lowest... it could be 16x. But the Yamaha has OWSC (Optimum Write Speed Control) that detects the fastest write speed supported by the disc and then writes @ that speed. OWCS can, and will, write at other speeds (40x,32x,24x,16x,8x) etc.

It does suck that you can't phisically change it w/ OWSC turned off but I always just let OWSC do it.

Yamaha all the way baby! 🙂 I don't care about the disc engraving since most of my burns use every last drop of space. What I do like about the F1 is it's ability to make the highest quality burns at high speed. This allows the most compatibility with other playback units (i.e. car, home dvd, etc.) If you are ever going to play the disc back on a device other than your pc, then this is more than worth it. The 8mb buffer helps prevent buffer underrun from ruining your burn, although 8mb is no longer that rare. The F1 also has the fastest rw speed currently (basically torches the comp), but again this burner is quality not quantity. I believe that it has an anti-vibration technology that helps quiet the unit at high speeds (you know those cd's spinning at 40x+ vibrate your case). All in all, the F1 is the mercedes of the burner world. The Plextor is a good one and I would guess that it can be has for cheaper than the F1.

disct@2 allows you to "draw" immages on the back of a cd in the remaining left over space after a burn, It allows you to draw pics, and text. The darker the back of the cd, the better, and audio i have no clue on as i havent used mine to decode audio
