Anyone have this drive? I have a quick question about the write speed. For some reason every time I burn anything whether it be music or data, it starts writing at 24X and 30 seconds later changes to 16X. The message I receive is "write speed changed due to media." Before you ask...I am only using 24X music and data CDRs. When I used up my 4X disc it would write to them at 8X. So what gives? Is it the burner or the Nero 5.0 software that came with the machine? At 16X it is still fast but I paid for a 24X burner and expect that speed.

The Yamaha drive firmware is veeeery good at determining the optimal write handling for the media - from ATIP manufacturer data and OPC procedure. From my experience with their drives from 8824 to 3200, they have a fine implementation of that, dramatically reducing the number of coasters, especially when doing Audio CDs.

So I'd say if the drive thinks these media aren't good for their advertized speed then so be it. Vice versa, your old media advertized as 4x might well actually be 8x capable media.
