Yamaha 20X write CDRW

any info on the 20X write CDRW from Yamaha? I've been thinking about upgrading my old 4X to a 16X, and noticed the 20X in best buy today.

Thanks

wait for one with BURN-Proof, Justlink or something of that kind, Yamaha only relies on large buffers to prevent underruns AFAIK. Also, I read that some company was coming out with a 24x real soon, I forget which company though.

Like I said AFAIK, they used a name that souded like burn-proof. Just found it on their website, they call it waste-proof. I think its a large buffer with a few software tweaks, not like the plextors or ricohs that stop the laser if the buffer is running too low.

I'm not 100% sure about this, so i'd read up on it if i were u.

Also, I'm not sure if the 20X from Yamaha has the same problem, but some of the recent Yamaha drives were 20X CAV instead of CLV, so only the outer tracks burn at the full speed.

well, *ALL* 20x+ drives seem to be heading the CAV way (ie, burning faster only on the outter part of the cd). There are a couple different implementations of it, but doing a CD@CLV@20+X would burn it up 🙂

I wouldnt be surprised if ALL 20X + CDRW drives end up being P-CAV, or CAV. I know Yamaha's 16X drive, and ther 20X drive are CAV writers.

While one could say the fact that their 16X writer was a CAV writer was a disadvantage because other writers were CLV, I don't think the same can be said about their 20X writer, because I'll be surprised if any companies produce a CLV 20X Writer.

I'm not sure if this drive has any form of Burn-Proof, but it does have an 8MB cache buffer.
I'd imagine a 20X CAV writer would be roughly equivalent to a regular CLV Writer at about 17.5X or so, assuming your writing a full 650MB disk that is. With smaller write sizes then the drive would have less time to get up to it's full write speed so the difference between it and a CLV writer would grow larger.

I believe that Yamaha's 20X Writer starts Writing at 12X when set to write at 20X, I'm not sure how long it takes for it to reach it's full 20X write speed.

Here is some generic quick stats:

20x10x40x CD-ReWritable Drive
20X CD-Write, 10X CD-ReWrite, 40X CD-Read
Internal IDE Interface
150 ms Average Access Time
8MB Cache Buffer Size
SafeBurn Buffer Underrun System

i cant speak for these new faster cdrw's, but i have an older yamaha 4x4x16. the large buffer size seems to work fine. occasionally have a wasted disc, but its rare.

nice link. to read the review, the yama 20x is equivalent to the teac 24x. sounds like they're hitting a wall on recording speed.
