YALT: Some company is sending out my resume without my knowledge!

Yet another legal thread...

I run the local .NET User Group for developers, so I'm regularly conversing with other developers in the city. A lot of them know me personally, and I'm friendly with most of the local consulting companies, etc. One of the group members came up to me and said, "So... I got your resume the other day." I was a bit flabbergasted as I hadn't submitted my resume to anyone in years. Luckily I know enough people to where the resume becomes a formality when obtaining work, and I no longer have to spam it to all the local headhunters. I tried to explain to him that it could not have been me, but he said the resume clearly said that I was the president of the local .NET User Group. I am, but I have never put that on any promotional material or resume.

So... this consulting company is submitting me to clients without my knowledge. I don't know the extent of their submissions, but I'm trying to discern that now. I actually worked with this consulting company back in 1998 for about a year, but clearly there is a wrong being perpetrated here. My only guess is that they want to get some .NET contracts and so they think having me affiliated with them would be good for promotion. This is illegal as hell, yes? Any ideas as to what I could/should do?

Cliff Notes: Someone has modified my resume and started submitting it to clients without my knowledge.

Sure it's not a friend that might have sent it over as a friendly gesture? Maybe he saw an opportunity for a great job he knew you'd want and just sent it over? Just a thought.

Have you spoken to anyone at the consulting company about this? Maybe they're trying to hook you up with a nice job while collecting a nice headhunter's fee. Try speaking to them and if you still don't want them to float your resume, follow up with a cease and desist letter.

You'll need to notify them in writing that you're no longer interested in being placed by them to have them stop. Otherwise, this is a legitimate use of your resume... :(

I have not spoken to this company in over 4 years. I have absolutely no contract with them. I have not requested to be submitted for any job opportunity by any headhunter.

Are you guys saying that they can legally modify my resume, and push me for job opportunities without my consent?

If people can call during dinner and offer you long distance, then probably.

Apples and oranges.

Can someone create a fake drivers license and use your name to get a rental car? Soliticing someone and impersonating someone are entirely different issues.
