My friend got accepted into both for CS masters... Yale is 1 year program while UCLA is 2 years. Problem is that Yale is ranked lower in US News for CS than UCLA.

What would look better on a resume? Would HR people even know that Yale is less of a school than UCLA for CS? I mean Ivy league is ivy league right?

Yale rating - 3.6 (ranked 25th) , ucla 3.9 (ranked 14th), 2003 numbers

edit: just to clarify that it's for MY friend, he's a genius and I'm not :(

I go to Yale for undergrad... and it's a great school, obviously. But I wouldn't assume that employers won't know the relatively strengths of schools in their area (so they'll probably know the strength of UCLA in CS). Has your friend visited both? I think he should consider what you think he'll learn there and get out of the experience (as well as the length of the programs) and decide for himself; either one will probably serve him well both on his resume and for his own knowledge.

Though I do admit... the Yale name there on your resume can be pretty cool.

wow! completely opposite of what i would expect from a yale student. one who actually considers others universities and doesn't just blindly diss others besides his own school, yale. interesting.
