YALaidOffT: Got the axe on Friday. :(

Title pretty much sums it up. Half of my department got taken aside on Friday and we were told that they can no longer offer us employment. We get 2 weeks of pay and vacation paid out, at least. I figured they were going to have more layoffs in the coming months, but everyone was pretty tight-lipped about it and it was quite a shock. My (former) department at my (former) company has gone from 16 people down to 4 in the past year.

If anyone knows of any positions for graphic design/production art/web design in the Greater Cincinnati area I'd be ecstatic. I could also pull off basic tech support and the like. I'll even take you out for beer/dinner when I get my first paycheck.

PM me if you know of anything or want my resumé.

🙁

Man, sorry to hear about that. I'm also in the Cincinnati Area (children's hospital) and we effectively put on a hiring freeze a month ago. My fiancee has been looking for a Librarian type position for 2 months now, with absolutely no luck.

If I know of any openings in your field, I'll be sure to PM you.

colgate?

I know a few people up in cincy, not sure if they are any help but I can ask them if they know of openings. Any specifics on what you do?

I'm in the Cincy area as well besides the startups in OTR I don't think we are a graphic design/production art/web design hotbed.

I was working at an offset printing company doing production art... which in a nutshell meant that I was sent sketches/concept art/rough drafts/low-res art of what needed printed and I could have to re-draw/re-create the art with printing specifications in mind. Production art is the step between design and printing. I would get artwork that was as complete as only needing copyright information and bleed added to it, or as incomplete as being a sketch drawn on notebook paper in red pen with the finished pieces needing to be stores across the country in a few weeks.

I was responsible for making sure that any logos, colors, product shots, and other brand equity used were in line with brand standards (ie, making sure that the red used in any Coca-Cola pieces was the exact shade of red they wanted or making sure that a Febreze logo was the most up-to-date version with the ® in the right place).

I'm quite knowledgeable in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, & QuarkXPress.

I terms of other jobs I could do, I've been doing web design as a personal hobby for about 10 years now. I code my sites to HTML 1.0 Strict and CSS3 standards, but the extent of my professional web work is making changes to existing sites. I know a little bit of PHP but in terms of programming, I wouldn't make the claim that I know enough about it to get a job revolving around it.

I know enough about computer repair that I could function in a tech support role. Admittedly it's mostly fixing friend's and relative's computers but again, I've been doing it for about 10 years and I've learned enough that I could get by. I don't have any certifications but would be willing to work on getting them if a company wanted me to work on it.

Also, I make a fantastic coffee cake.

I think Lexis-Nexis in Miamisburg (Dayton Mall area) always seems to be hiring tech-support (external customer phone support). The hours and pay will probably be shitty but it could be a good stop-gap measure.

Damn, sorry to hear it man. Good luck with it all, hell I'd be lucky to find Cincinnati on a map let alone know of anything out that way!

P&G headquarters is up there.

Heh, one of the big reasons my company had to lay off a lot of people is because P&G didn't renew some of our contracts. They accounted for about 80% of our business this time last year, and they account for about 30% of the company's business now.

Quick look on Dice shows three headhunters looking for Grapic Design (this is the first phrase in your OP).

I do not know if it is the same position and if you may be qualified.

It may be a haul, but consider looking in areas up to Dayton/Columbus and down to Lexington
