YAL[aundry]T: Hand washing

I have a heavy cotton sweater that I really really like. In the past, I've had it dry cleaned, but I'm trying to cut down on unnecessary expenses lately. The tag says to hand wash in cold water. I washed it last week in cold water, and trying to wring out the excess water is IMPOSSIBLE. I laid it flat on the drying rack, and there was so much water in the fabric that it was dripping for a good 12 hours after I laid it flat to dry.

In the future, if something says to hand wash, is it okay to put it on the delicates cycle in my washer? Hand washing wouldn't be so bad if the water was easily squeezable-outable...or something. :p

sounds like your sweater will be fine. of course i'm biased because we own a dry cleaners, but i've found that dry cleaning keeps my sweaters "softer" in the long run.

if your dryer had a low/no heat setting you could try that.

obviously, don't try to wash silk/leather/suede stuff in water :)

If it's too sopping after hand washing, just throw it in the washing machine and put it on spin cycle. That'll get most of the water out and you can just dry the damp sweater on the rack afterwards.

if you really want to follow the directions.. roll it up in a towel, put it in the bathtub, and step on it.

that'll squeeze most of the water out, and you can toss the towel in the dryer.
