YAJT: Yet Another Job Thread

Oh lord...here we go.

I just sent an e-mail to my chain of command in my reserve unit requesting a transfer from Resource Management Clerk to Artillery Soldier.

I'm going to be screamed at at so many levels I can't even begin. I'm the first trained clerk my unit has had for 5 years. It's stupid though, since the job that I had before I was trained is the exact same one I have now! It's like I left my girlfriend, and my life, for a month for no reason...kind of annoying.

I hate the way the CF treats clerks. I mean, I joined the army to be a SOLDIER, actually go and...y'know...fight? Blow stuff up? I mean, I fire the occasional round here and there, but nothing like what I wanna do...which is lob rounds whenever I can.

At the moment, I fire my regulation 60 5.56 rounds a year for my qualification training. Trained troops fire lots more, plus machine-guns. I'm known in my unit as one of the best machine-gunners around, but I don't get to shoot the damn things because "I'm not a combat arms soldier".

So now I put in the transfer. If it goes through, it means I get a demotion (from Corporal to Private, oh well I was one for a very long time, no pay decrease) and 3 weeks at CFB Petawawa learning my new trade.

Do you think it's worth the effort, ATOT? Spend the rest of my military career in an office? Or actually do something that I'll be respected for, and love doing?

Do something that you love doing.
On the other side, spending the rest of your military carrer in an office might be a safer choice, and maybe a little less expensive. Or maybe more expensive, who knows?
I think being a clerk all the army would have made me jealous on everyone else who were a soldier

Oh, it does. BELIEVE ME.

All my buddies that are gunners (artillery soldiers) talk about firing fleschette rounds out of the howitzers...and I'm all like..."I did some claims!". The look at me funny and go back to talking about ripping dummies to bits with thousands of needles.

I'm not sure I understand why you would get demoted. I served and have never come across a situation where a change in MOS would cause a demotion.

I've done both sides...pushed papers and lived in the bush for 3 months on end because the arty couldn't zero their guns and hit with 98% accuracy. Combat arms is way better IMO...buuuuut, make sure you get Mechanized Infantry....never never ever ever go to Light infantry battalion. That is serious blood sweat and tears there dude.

Take care!

It won't get demoted in rank, it will get demoted in function. And everything in the army is based on function (except chevrons)
