My wife is basically shopping around for a jobs that appeal to her. She stumbled across the idea of being a travel agent and it PIQUED her interest. My question is: Has anyone here worked as a travel agent and would you recommend it? What is the workload like? Is the pay decent? Thanks.

My cousin's friend Jimmy said his aunt was a travel agent and made like $150,000 per year and got to travel wherever and whenever she wanted and got tons of cool free stuff and was like living in a huge house with a yacht and stuff.

i am guessing that was situational....

i have known someone who did it part time and made some decent money, but nothing extravagant. Although, i do know she traveled a crap load and still had money to play with...it depends on your wants/needs IMO

I would assume it's pretty much like any other sales job - it's feast or famine. There's some incredibly sucessful ones. But for most of them, it's an average paying sales job where you have to put up with really grumpy people.

I would have to imagine that with the advent of so much stuff being self booked online that travel agents are becoming a dying breed.

I have thought of this too and the problem is so many people use the internet and not B&M travel agents

No Jimmy said all travel agents can make that if they join up with this one program that you sell packages with and help other people become travel agents its really neat and you make tons of money to buy a yacht and stuff

I looked at the travel agent industry this past year, as a voc-rehab idea...Talked to several of the local agencies here that we've done business with in the past. Some good schools out there, but most places want you to bring your own clientele with you if they hire you. Trying to get a job with only schooling is difficult. Wages vary by location, (usually on commission), but the travel perks can be wonderful...

My wife considered that too but a lot of businesses in our area go through travel agents for business travel.

I use Expedia a LOT for my travel plans nowdays, but most travel agencies stay pretty busy. Business travelers, or just people who want someone who knows the destination and can handle the details for them...
