YAJT: Should I try to get out of IT?

I've been working in the IT field for going on 10 years now. I currently work a cushy government job as a sysadmin. For the last few years I've felt that I've been stagnating. I gave a serious effort to finish my BS during that time, but now that I've got it, I'm not sure if it's really helped much in the short run. I tend to think I would like to get into IT management, but I'm not really sure about that either.

Recently I have come across a non-IT opening that looks like it would be fun and interesting. I am seriously considering applying for it. My only problem is that I'm not sure how I should frame my IT experience in a way that would apply to a non-IT position.

For those that have already made this kind of career change, what would you recommend?

I guess my first question would be, what is this non-IT position?

As a system admin, you can still relate many characteristics and abilities to any non-IT position.

I would love to leave IT, but I don't know if I want to learn a completely new field and get bottom feeder pay again.

The job title is Information Specialist. According to the job description:

...the incumbent serves as the staff specialist for long range and short range planning and administration services and programs for the integrated resources within the region. This requires considerable information service and interpretation through the use of a wide range of media including websites and internet links, audio-visual, publications, exhibits and display, and through partnerships with other federal and state agencies and associations. Incumbent has responsibility for 1) assuring the adequacy of plans and recommendations submitted by units, 2) advising on the interpretation and implementation of national and regional policy directives and programs, 3) the review, evaluation, adaptation, and application of technology and new research findings, and 4) the inspection and critical review of program implementation in various units.

...the incumbent participates with the Director and other members of the staff in the development of the overall regional programs, including: formulation of policy, development of immediate and long-range objectives, correlation and integration of the various activities in the unit, and establishment of priorities.

I personally like working in IT, but to each his own. What job are you considering? Is the pay going to be comparable? if not, it may not make sense to leave your cushy job. What happens if you make the change and find yourself wishing you had stayed put? it sounds like you have a good job that you should seriously consider before leaving on a whim.

The pay is comparable. Only about a 3% salary increase.

And yes, I do have a good job currently. I've been here for almost 6 years, the longest I've worked anywhere. It used to be fulfilling, but I'm not so sure anymore.

I decided last year to start making the move to get out of IT when I returned to college. So I'm not majoring in Finance...

IT is fun as a hobby but as a career I'm just not into anymore.

Same here Gov't job 9 yrs in IT, was more intereting in the private for the 12 yrs before that but finding a non-it job that pays what I get would be hard and I have young kids at home. . .

Funny thing was I just talked to a guy who graduated electronics tech 25 yrs ago, been a financial planner? since then and is now back working tech at a telco 😕
They are so short of bodies they will take him even though his skills are 25 yrs rusted!
His wife makes good coin kids almost out so he changed job streams.

I just started in IT and have been working in PC/Network support for about 3 years now. I have my BSIT and I'm even considering leaving this field sometime soon... just have no idea what I'll do to earn a decent paycheck. I have my days where I enjoy my job... but I'm so ready for something new where I dont' feel like I'm everyones b*tch.
