YAJT: professional references

vital

I've been filling out job applications and I'm having a hard time listing some professional references. I usually put my friends name down as references but most companies prefer a professor from college or something. My problem is that I never really talked much to my professors in college so I don't think any of them would remember me. What should I do if I can't find any professional references?

How can you go through college and not have one professor who can remember you?

Easy.. go in and take notes during lecture, take exam and leave...then receive a grade. Communication with professors was very minimal and I really do regret it.. it just wasn't something I was thinking about during college. If I knew it would be so important I would have talked to at least half my professors.

What the heck are you applying to that wants a prof as reference?

2 IT companies so far have asked. Even when I list my job history with the contact information they'll still ask for at least 3 professional references that are usually professors.
