YAJT : Prima-donnas at work

This happend at work last friday. I work for the Network, Server, and Health department, and I got a call from the helpdesk with a request for a branch in Palo Alto, California. The branch is requesting access to the server at the site so that they can install a small program. The also claimed that this was done for a branch at Madison Square Garden. (We actually do not have a branch there)

Turns out that it was for a major piece of software by Advent, called Portfolio Manager. The broker in California spent $17,000 (on his own American Express card) to purchase this software BEFORE asking the business if they could use this software.

The business side of the company, of course, denied the request last month. So he's stuck with the software in question. They tried to get it installed anyway and couldn't get into the server. They called the helpdesk trying to use social engineering by claiming that they lost the access that they were suppose to have to install programs. The lies about that fake branch didn't help.

The broker is throwing a fit right now. So it looks like we'll have to test that software on the server to see if we can offer it to the entire company. We're going to take as long as we can to test it.

Wow, that's simply horrible. At least he didn't try to hax the server or something, I guess as long as you get paid the same might as well take time to test it out?

There's always people who think they're so important that procedures aren't necessary for them - would be a terrible shame if it just wasn't possible to use that software in the end 😀

We will be fair in testing this software, meaning I'll test it thoroughly instead of just passing it without motivation or care as to the quality.

We're going to disable many of the program's features that break security and corporate standards. In the end it is probably going to turn into a glorified contact management software that makes colorful charts.

all for 17K$ classic 😛

Reality check.

that software WILL be installed whether you like it or not. The guy that bought it makes the company money. IT does not.

the software WILL be installed.

Doesn't matter.

If you want it done you can make it happen. All you have to do is push hard enough. The money is already spent. that software will be installed.

"better to push it through than ask for permission"

there's some truth to it.... obviously he makes big bucks, that's why we're taking a second look.

the #1 stockbroker for the company Joe got the company to sink in $1 million+ for another contact management software. Seems to be working for him.

I hate that, what these people need to realize is they pay their sys admins for a reason...so they don't break the servers with untested software. The best part is when someone actually does manage to get the software installed and things go to hell, guess who they call to fix it?

QFT. This is why you will almost always end up doing some stupid crap for Sales. They come up with the most ridiculous requests for reports (like how many people took between 1-3 tries to log in to the web site) and you get to waste your time implementing them.
