YAJT - I'm conflicted at work...what to do?

I'm currently working for a HelpDesk at a pretty large comapny...excellent benefits. I'm looking to move to more of a field support job (in the same company). Well yesterday I had an interview for the job, it went well and have a good feeling about it. However, today my boss presented me with an offer. Basically a raise (7%) as long as I don't leave for a year. Not that great of an offer at all but at least they know they need me.

Now the hard part. I know if I get the other job I'll get at least 10% more than I currently make. However, I'm considering a counter offer to my boss. Our company uses pay grades. Each pay grade has a min, market, and max. In my current grade I'm towards the low end. My offer would be to pay me market...they obviously need me. The thing is the market is about 23% more than my current pay. Anyone think I have a chance in hell in getting it?

I'm open to all suggestions and/or experiences with similar situations.

i agree with spikespiegal.

think 4-5 years from now. you never know the opportunities that might open up to you at your current company.

Ignoring the opportunity for advancement, which will give you more satisfaction/enjoyment - your current position at a 23% raise, or the new position at a 10% raise? This of course assumes that your current boss will say yes to 23%, and the new position really is a 10% bump. If you are burned out at your current position and wanting a change, would an extra 13% over what the new position pays make it all better, or will you be wishing that you took the new job three months from now?

Go with the other job if you feel there is more opportunity in whatever you want to do in your life.
Just be sure you have that offer in the bag before going back to counter-offer your boss.

If your denied, you at least have the other job to fall back on because they'll either can you that day or start looking for a replacement for you.

Geez, why has no one already asked this?

Where are the better looking girls, this job or the new one?
😛

Think that's tough? Try this one:

I just got a job offer from one company, located in a town a good 5 hours from where I live now. I went to an interview yesterday for another company, and I'm pretty sure they're going to offer me a position, too. This second company is located in the same city where I live, about 20 miles from my house. I'd love to stay here in town, but if what the manager told me yesterday is true, the first company offered me a good 30% higher salary than what his company is going to. So, follow the money or stay in familiar territory?

In large companies managers like to see people move around, so they can see different segments of the business and show they are willing to change and not get stuck in a rut. Change is good.

It's a helpdesk - I'm SURE there are plenty of good looking girls working alongside.

Not quite, but there's probably a ton that come to or call the Help Desk. I worked at a university HD for a couple semesters. Good people-watching spot 😛
