YAJT: accepting an offer

here is the scenario:

I have 1 job offer for the summer (May). They need an answer by tomorrow. I have a couple of other places that havent returned to me yet with an answer. So the question is should I accept the offer and then consider go back on it if/when something better comes along?

some people do it and are fine, but you never know what will happen down the road in terms of burnt bridges. i wouldn't do it for that reason, and also as a matter of respect / pride. has the company refused to give you an extension?

it government. they gave me 3 frickin days to make a decision, and i havent even been home to talk to my family from hthe interview yet. No extensions...

I do understand that renegging is unprofessional but 3 days isnt enough to decide on a job that I will be at for the next 3-5 years

I'd pass, you can probably do better than the government.

And you should be able to make the decision without your family's help. 😉 Although apparantly some people bring their parents to interviews these days :Q

I think if you're going to work for the government, you have to work for them long enough to get a pension to make it worthwhile.

well, yea, it is unreasonable for the employer to only give you 3 days, but personally i don't think that gives an excuse to renege. though like i said, plenty of people do it... its just a personal decision in the end. might come back to bite you, might not. have you tried contacting the other employers to let them know the situation and ask them if they can get you a decision before your deadline?

I did call today, they said no exceptions.

its not too bad. I love the work and the pay is somewhat decent, but a good solid 25k-35k less than the non-government job

I took a government job for civil engineering and they pay just as well as private and the benefits knock any private company out of the water. Also, with a government job you will keep your sanity. You don't have anyone working you to death so the owner can make a bigger profit. Plus you don't have to worry about ever being laid off.

thats a huge consideration for me. 35 hour weeks are hard to come by these days...

Shens on government job keeping your sanity... you have to deal with crazy government decisions.

Well the obvious question CT is if you were magically offered all the position that you've applied for suddenly tomorrow, would you accept the position thats deadline is tomorrow( Comp. A) ? If no, would Comp. A be better than your current situation? Do you want the position offered by Comp. A? From what you've said about your current situation and from what position I can guess is Comp. A (asst. DA), it sounds like you'd really like to be anywhere than where you currently are at now. Might you bite the bullet and take the position that benefits you the best in there here-and-now and take Comp. A's offer and worry about all the other companies that may or may not trickle in later? Would the difference in pay if you were to be offered a position with Company B, C, or D be better than the situation you would be in with Comp. A?

There's a decent chance that I'll be in the same situation in a couple weeks.

its a crappy situation indeed....

I've got three potential jobs lined up, all of which will pay more than what I make now. One has a closer commute and is probably more enjoyable, another may pay better than the other two, and the third is with a company with a definite future, great benefits, and a casual environment.

The environment is much more casual than private in my situation. I know people that work in private and its non-stop work because you always have to bill yourself to a job.
