I've been interviewing at this new company, and so far things seem to be going well. I'm a little concerned about a couple of things though.

I've worked my entire career in a business casual environment, this job requires full business dress (jacket, shirt, slacks, tie, the works) for an IT sysadmin job, which seems a little over-the-top to me. I've been told that everyone at this company has to dress this way, regardless of what they do. I could probably adapt but...

The other concern I have is that they enforce a mandatory 45 work week. No comp, no extra pay. It's that last part that gets me. I'm not afraid of a little OT, but I expect to be either comp'd or paid for my OT.

I'm heavily leaning towards passing this job up, as I don't think I'd be happy there. Mostly because of the 45 hours deal. Am I being too selfish?
 
I'd pass it up. Sounds like it's an uptight place to work, who would have no problem dropping you should you ever mess up.

During my interview I got the idea that it's a very conservative place to work. I was told everyone has to work 45 hours because "If it's good enough for the sales people it's good enough for everyone else.'"

Ewww...I can do business casual. No way I would want to work at a job where I had to wear full business dress. I would let that one pass on by.
 
It's your call. If you don't think you are going to be comfortable there then you probably won't be. Why are you considering it in the first place? Is it a lot more money, closer to home, something else? There's more to life than money.

I could never work a job I hate just to make more money.
 
are you serious? Everybody at my work puts in well over 45 hrs per week without overtime. If you are a salaried employee you do what you gotta do to finish the job.
 
1) Nothing wrong with professionalism at a job site. So you have to invest a few $$ into looking better than the average bear. You for your character.

2) Nowhere is it written down that one has to work a 40 hour week. You choose the amount/type of work that you wish to do and get paid accordingly. 40 hour is custom; not cast in stone.
Professionals should get the job done; you are expected to do so. Unless your time is billed to a thrid party (customer); then take the work at the hours expected by the employer and do the job.

At least you understand the conditions upfront.
 
I turned the job down. I wasn't comfortable with the interview and the "vibe" I was getting from the place anyway.

Don't think me lazy, I work OT now. I am on call 24/7 and get calls in the middle of the night, weekends, holidays, etc.

Difference is I get comp'd for my extra time over 40 hours. This place was expecting 45 hours, no comp, no extra pay. There was still going to be OT on top of that. Just didn't seem like I'd be happy there.

As they say, it's always easier to find a new job when you already have an existing one.

To answer another question: I'm looking to move back to VA from GA to be closer to my parents. They are getting older and it would be nice to be closer to them if they needed me. I'm looking to move by the end of the year, so I'm not in a big rush.

I'm also hoping to finish my MCSE 2003, and maybe have my current employer pay for the tests. 🙂

unless you are not retarded and capable of doing your job in the alotted time
 
Sounds like you made the right choice. I've turned down offers before because I didn't feel like I'd fit at the new job.

where i work there is no formal comp and no OT for salaried workers. many peoples work 50-80 weeks occasionally. sounds normal to me. i guess you must have a better job, so don't take this new "bad" job

exactly what I was thinking.
 
IMHO, a professional should do whatever it takes to finish the job, but it should be more rare than common for that job to require 45+ hours per week. If it's a common and expected thing, the company is probably understaffed.
