YAJobT: Position "on hold"?

I went in for an interview (first real one since I started college) a week ago and I thought it went well; not great, but not bad either. After an hour and a half chat, the interviewer said, "are you interested in the position?" to which I said, yes. He said okay, we'll be in touch.

HR emails me the day after the interview to say "let's touch base later next week to discuss the next steps."

So, I call the HR rep today and she says, "to be honest, we haven't had time to discuss the position...why don't you call me back during the first week of October?" Here's where I'm confused...my friend works in the company and she says that the position is apparently "on hold". Arr?

I am more than qualified for the position, albeit a few minor things which I can easily pick up on the job. I'm not an utter social dimwit and have proven experience working with people. If they weren't seriously considering me, they would have said no outright by now, right? Right? [whimpering]need a job to feed my high speed connection habit[/whimpering].

Cliffs:
1. Job interview.
2. HR says, "call us in a week".
3. I call, HR says, "uhhh...um...call later".
4. Friend at company says the position is "on hold".
5. Confused.

Maybe it's a fiscal reason, they're trying to fit it into some weird new quarter?

On hold means they are in a financial freeze (they need someone to approve the funds for you salary), or they simply wantto interview another person.

sounds like they'd like to hire someone, but are either waiting on another personnel decision to be made (reitrement/terminations, etc.) or can't fund the payroll at the moment.

They just put a freeze on all hiring here due to increased fuel costs ... indefinitely. I'm thinking this gives me more leverage in talking about altering my working hours 😉

Had that happen before, but they were honest and said they were in a financial freeze... worked out in the end and I joined the company
