YAIT (injury): Punched something, knuckle hurts, bruise or broken?

So yeah, over the weekend I had a small drunken ordeal, where I at one point was rather angry and started punching the wall...day after, it was swelled up, as expected...but the pain is still around 4/5 days later. It's still a little bigger than the other hand, but I can move the middle finger however I want (full range of motion), and the muscle around the knuckle still hurts, especially when I massage it. (I guess my form is poor when I'm drunk...I should know how to punch better than to concentrate the force on the main knuckle...) I just don't remember it being like this the last time I punched something so hard w/o any padding, making me slightly concerned.

And yeah yeah yeah, "go see a doctor", but it's nothing hugely threatening, unless someone here who knows, says it's broken...I just don't want the possibility of it setting wrong. But if it's broken, I shouldn't be able to move the finger much if it's broken right?

You'd think I'd learn...but noooooo, I have something to prove to someone, so I decided to down about 85% of a bottle of vodka. stupid stupid stupid.

The wall pwnz j00! 😉

Sounds like you just bruised your fingers up pretty good. If you can move them, they're not broken. Try putting some ice on your hand for the swelling and take a couple of Aleve to help with the pain.

Could be a fracture... i just got pins taken out of my hand from punching a brick wall. fractured near the joint on the palm hand on the pinky side. i didnt go to the doctor right away..because my hand felt fine after 2 weeks.. just couldnt have anyone squeezing my hand(ie: shaking).
go get it xrayed.

ehhh, the pain's fine, I have a good pain tolerance. Just as long as no one has been as stupid as I was, and had their knuckle broken, then all is good. It FEELS like a bruise, but then I don't understand why it hasn't gone away yet.

doh...that's no good. I can shake my own hand, and it doesn't hurt...^_^ I guess I'll give it a few more days...then if problems persist, I guess I'll see a doctor. I wouldn't even know who to see, I never see a doctor...other than the yearly physical. Guess it'll be him.

If you go to a doctor...he's got this wonderfull thing called an "X-Ray Machine" that can let you know if its broken or not 🙂

That sounds like what they call a "boxer's fracture". The bones, mainly the outside two in the hand, can break easily.

But if the hand itself didn't swell up then maybe the knuckle is the problem.
Don't think that it can't be broke just because you can move it around. I volunteer at a local hospital and I saw an older woman with a boxer's fracture. She moved her hand all over the place even though it was broke. Some old women have very high pain tolerances.

It's not broken. I've done this several times in the past when practicing with a flattened log punching bag. It hurts for up to a week, then you'll be fine. You need to punch with your wrist correctly lined up so that all 4 knuckles absorb the impact and transfer it back towards your elbow.

Best bet is to get it checked. I've busted 8 fingers and never got them checked now they all have this odd slant to them. Hell, one of them was from breaking the outside bone and shoving the knuckle about an inch in. Now every once in a while these little bone fragments move around and jam up the joints making it pretty tough to bend the fingers. And yes I could move all of them after and I know they've been broken due to subsequent x-rays that showed the healed fracture.

How much can really be done for broken bones in the hand? It's not exactly something you can immobilize.

If it's just one finger it can be immobilized. If it's the whole hand, ....well that's another thing....

I got that fracture in middle school when the school bully decided to pick on me one day. I broke my hand, I broke his nose. He never bothered me again.

Ah, those were the days... growing up in a small town.

Nowadays his 6 friends would jump in too, beat the snot out of you... and then shoot you several times. :Q
