YAIRSWT: Yet Another iMessage Randomly Stopped Working Thread

1). I was using iMessage, minding my own business

2). Was texting someone, and noticed it stopped being in iMessage. (They have an iPhone). Asked "what's up with your phone?" She mentioned something'd been wonky and that she was "missing" texts.

3). Start getting iMessages from her from an iCloud email.

4). She does some tinkering, and now I get iMessages/texts from her again, but it starts a NEW thread in my messages app on my phone (on my computer, it's all iMessages)

5). This is kind of a big deal, because I've known this girl for 6+ years, and the "original" thread has, like, the written history of our relationship (pictures, texts, iMessages, whatevers). It would be REALLY inconvenient to have all of that in some "archive" thread, and then suddenly start a new, randomly (and for no reason?) in this new thread.

6). I've done some searching, and apparently they sometimes randomly [re] combine? Is there anything I can tell her to do? Is there anyway of "merging" these?

HELP! Please?!

(PS: Please don't tell me "not to use iMessage" or that iMessage sucks. I sorta know iMessage sucks, but it has some features I really use, and I can't very well just stop using it. Thanks)

Are you iMessaging from the phone number or the email? Did you try sending a message from the original thread?

Also sometimes resetting the iPhone's network settings can correct errors.

And yeah, I don't like iMessage. I strictly use MMS.

This happened to my wife too today. Apple likes to randomly kick a user's registered phone number from iMessage, and you start getting messages from them from their Apple ID in another thread. Then it goes back to normal after a while, and you start receiving messages in the original thread. Seems to happen once every 6 months or so with my contacts.

Go to Settings -> Messages -> Send & Receive -> Start new conversations from

Make sure you're sending from your phone number and not your email address.

It might help to log out and log in again to make sure the device is properly authorized.
