Yet another I got caught speeding thread.

I allegedly did 68 in a 35. It's a road with no traffic. No little children or bunny rabits or other people were at risk.

This motorcycle cop guy who isn't on duty stops me. He says I'll be mailed a ticket and have to go to court since it's more than 30 over.

If it was 29 over, a difference of 4mph, I wouldn't have to go to court. He had no radar gun. It could very well be I was going 29 over.

Anyways, I got the ticket. There's no fine field filled in. So I call the municipal court, and they front desk lady I guess is who I talked to.

She says I'll get fine at court. I ask her if they'll do anything else, like take my license, send me to driving school, point and laugh at me for being the idiot that got caught.

She says no.

Is she right? If I'm going to court isn't it for more than the judge to say your fine is $___ ?

I don't really care about the fine, unless it's more than $300. I just don't wanna spend $500 to go to driving school or lose my license or anything.

Of course, if there is any easy way to get out of this, like calling up the ACLU and telling them big brother is sending off duty cops after me or something, I'd be glad to try it.

How can you get a ticket from a cop off duty without a radar gun? Was he following you because he would have been speeding too, doh! Cops suck sometimes.

At 30+ over you will likely end up with a $300+ fine. In Oregon that would be a Class A ticket, one step below reckless driving.

How much over $300?

He was off duty because he told me he was. That's why I was mailed a ticket not just given one.

What exactly did he write you up for?

Did he give a statute number? What state?

n/m, just remembered you don't actually have the ticket..

Pray that he didn't hit you for reckless driving.

At 20+ over or double the speed limit can be considered reckless in Virginia and Maryland, the areas I grew up around. Not so sure about NY though.

How did he pull you over? Was he riding his police motorcycle and flipped the lights?? If he wasn't there is no way you can get me to stop.

I thought you always get your ticket mailed to you, but you get a "notice to appear". But then I should clearly know, 94 in 70, but thats not as bad as 68 in 35. Damn Nissan Maxima for having such a touchy engine at high speeds, slightest pedel push is an instant +2 mph, heh.

20+ is reckless?

Damn, that's harsh.

Same here in Ohio. Although I got a ticket for 22over and didn't receive wreckless because I was the only person on the road.

I'm in Missouri.

Issued by City of Gladstone.

He was off duty, riding his police issued motorcycle.

I just don't want to be bankrupt because of this. I certainly don't want license revoked or driving school.

They said I'm under no obligation to report to my insurance agency, but if insurance agency decides to look at random they will find.

You won't go bankrupt over one ticket, especially if it's your first. You most likely won't have your license revoked.

It's a speeding ticket, not murder.

You will likely pay a few hundred $$$ for it, & most likely you'll be paying high insurance premiums for the next few years.

But that's about the worst of it.

Its up to the discretion of the officer. I got pulled over for about 25 over the limit (forgot the exact number). Cop just gave me a speeding ticket.
In North Carolina, I got pulled over for 57 in a 35. Cop said he could arrest me on the spot, which you can do for reckless driving, but let me go with a warning (thank god).

The important bits are:
- At 10+, you get points on your driving record.
- At 20+, you can get fined for reckless driving.
- And I am sure there are more the faster you go.

Regarding insurance. I got a high speeding ticket like this once. My current insurance at the time did not go up. But when I got new insurance 2 years later (grad college, moved to a new state), they found that ticket and raised my rates due to it.
So it might not get you now but it can in the future. Not exactly sure how long these tickets affect you for insurance, I think its 3 years.

Its an option you can do to reduce the number of points and fine due to your infraction. It can also prevent it from being sent to the insurance companies. I haven't done it personally, but I know others who have.

In Georgia if you do 24+ and are under 21 years of age you get your license suspended for a year.

How much does driving school usually cost?

I was given the option of traffic school for a careless driving ticket.

Cost me $75 or so, plus a day in class.

No big deal, & it got me out of the ticket.
