YAIBAT,WOT: Yet another, "I'm buying a television, which one?" thread

So, my roomie is leaving and taking his 50" Samsung plasma with him. The viewing distance is actually pretty large, maybe 10' or so, I haven't measured. The 50" was fine for watching TV, but as I'm sure you all know, it could actually seem small when playing video games and stuff (mostly hockey...lying back on the couch and playing hockey, it was hard to see the puck sometimes. I've also got horrible eyesight).

Anyway, so 50" is fine, but nothing smaller than that, I'd imagine. 1080p is a must, for HTPC concerns.

Usage:
Digital cable
DVDs
Xbox
HTPC (in the future, and mostly for downloaded content, emulation, etc, although I might buy a BD player and do that)

Priorities: (in order)
PQ
Size
Price
Power consumption/longevity

I have a Denon 3801 that I use as an AVR. No HDMI, and while it supports 7 speakers, obviously no advanced BD audio stuff, and I don't have 7 speakers anyway (I do have 5, however).

I don't have any real desire to buy a standalone BD player, but I obviously will in the future sometime.

I have no dogmatic preference between LCD and plasma.

The room is not particularly light.

Price is a concern, but not the primary one.

Initial thoughts: I'm not sure if I want to spend $2000, but CostCo has Sammy and Panny 58" panels for that. But part of me thinks a 50" panel and a new 9 series Denon AVR (like the 2609 or whatever it is) might be a better use of 2 grand. Maybe I could even get a little for my 3801 (which I love more than life itself and don't really feel the need to replace, although HDMI would be nice).

Anyway, that's a lot of info, but I'm just curious what you people think. I probably should decide on a price point (a year ago, I'd figured around 2000, for a 50" pioneer) but now that I see 50" going for half that (granted, a Panny) I'm starting to think maybe spending less is a better idea. And then there's the whole AVR sitch...but you get the idea.

Keep the AVR. Upgrade your speakers before you lay out for a new receiver. Forget the HTPC and buy a PS3.

I quite like my speakers. BA towers (I forget the exact model...880s, maybe? They've got 8" powered drivers in them) and BA VRS Rear channel, with some form of BA center channel. Forget what, exactly. I see no reason to upgrade them until I decide I can afford 10k speakers, which is probably never.

And I don't know what the HTPC will do, but I'd mainly use the HTPC for BD (which in the absence of 7 speaker setup, an HTPC can do just fine), emulation (maybe the Ps3 can do Mame, NES, SNES, etc, I have no idea) and as a main server for my lossless audio collection ( I doubt the HD is big enough, and I don't want to stream off another computer, seeing as that other computer I'd be streaming off of might as well be the HTPC).

So I'm not sure how that helps me pick a TV, but thanks for the input.

A friend has that TV. It has excellent color levels, and a great size for the price. If it will fit, I think it will fit your bill nicely! It also leaves you plenty of cash for that receiver!

Hmmm. Kinda forgotten about DLP. I remember people saying LCoS was the best PQ available (better even than a nicer plasma?) three or four years ago. Is that still true? And what about things like bulbs...those aren't LED DLPs, are they? I like buying from Amazon (saving CA tax would be nice). The size is great too, and I'm not a flat panel snob. What about viewing angles? We've got this sectional, so people would be viewing it from all different vantage points. That's an issue with RP tvs, no?

Amazon DLP's

Also AFAIK DLP's have smaller viewing area than Plasma/LCD

Yeah, the Panasonic G10 is less than 1300$ on amazon now. I'm very tempted to buy it although the V10 at $1880 is very tempting as well. Not sure I can justify the price difference... (yet)...

Whats the big difference between those two?

The V10 is THX certified so it has decent out of the box settings compared to the G10. Dollar for dollar the G10 is best IQ you can buy out there. With calibration settins from AVS forum the G10 can look just as good as the V10 for the most part.

On the original point I always recommend you buy the size you want now and 5 years from now and if there is any shadow of a doubt in your mind now that 50 seems too small then buy something bigger. Now the IQ wont be as good as say what you would get from a 50 G10 a samsung 55 640 would run you under 2k easy at B&M. The 58 550 sammy as well is a lot of TV for the money and can be found cheap sometimes. I would keep your AVR as well and get a nicer bd player later on with analouge outs whick will work fine with your 3801.
