(Yet Another HVAC) thread.

So uhm. I work in a hot warehouse. Drive home in a car that has no AC. Get home to find my apt scorching hot. All this under the Florida sun. I can repair computers, cars and other crap but HVAC stuff is totally out of my element. Hopefully I may learn a thing or two based on the responses here.

As I mentioned previously, I live in an apartment complex. I would usually call maintenance to come have a look at it, but they're all off their shift. The AC unit is on the roof (don't ask) So, I have no direct access to it. I tried to "reboot" it by shutting off the inside unit switch, the circuit breaker and the ac control and it tries to turn on, but only for a few moments, then shuts off.

Sometimes, Ill find the inside unit fins (after the air filter) would freeze solid along with a copper tube coming from the roof.

I also hear the inside unit makes a constant hissing noise. Not a leaking type noise but the same noise you hear when its about to turn on. In my case, it doesn't.

So that's it. Let me know if there's anything I could do to fix this. Otherwise, Ill probably end up drowning in my own sweat as I sleep tonight.

Thanks.

certainly you should be able to contact the maintenance to come out afterhours.

Actually, you're absolutely correct. Just learned that there is, indeed, an emergency maintenance crew in my complex. Should be here soon.

Bout to say most places have that. Mine broke down a few weeks ago and emergency maintenance (2 guys) were out here in about 10 minutes and the repair took about an hour (whole new outside unit).

Apparently having a broken AC is not an emergency. So I have to wait till 8am tomorrow to go bitch and possibly smash something at the office.

Iceing Evap - Dirty filter, Dirty Evap coil, or Low Freon. My first thoughts.

The filter is pretty much new. The evap coil fins look clean, should I open it up the unit and see if theres more dust anywhere? Before I open it, I would shut down all power to it for obvious reasons. As for the Freon, that might be the case.

Let it thaw out and then try turning on again. May work for a little while until it freezes again. May not work but worth a shot.

Yeah, I let it thaw out. Rebooted the power and still freezes and shuts off. The copper pipe starts to freeze pretty quick too.
