For those who haven't seen it:

Obviously not surprised he didn't like it and he pretty much says the same things all of the people here mention when they disparage the game.

I like the overall idea of Eve, but the negative comments completely outweigh the positive comments I've heard about it.

To each his own I suppose.

Eve is only enjoyable if you can play it with multiple friends who also play the game. Otherwise, it gets dull rather quickly. I played for a good 9 months, but after all that time saw no point in continuing to play, so I dropped it for TF2 and I've never looked at another MMO since.

This is key. I've played the game for 4 years or so, I'm not even sure how long anymore, I'd have to check. But it's still fun because I have lots of friends in the game and am in a great corporation (guild) and we get stuff done. Without the team-play aspect I can definitely see how the game would be incredibly underwhelming.

Every MMO is like this. It's not the MMO that makes the experience, it's the friends that are online with you that make the experience. Every MMO sucks if you're just going online running around with a bunch of strangers, even if you befriend eventually and become "guild mates". You'll realize how shallow a relationship it is and the moment you turn off the computer it's just another random person on the internet.

Anarchy Online, Raganarok Online, Final Fantasy XI, City of Heroes/Villains I've all played with friends. The moment the friends left, I left. It's so boring without them.

As for the review, spot on. :p

It's not really that difficult to learn - as long as you took geometry and/or algebra in highschool you shouldn't have any problems understanding how tracking and signature radius works which is the entire basis of combat in the game. Maximize your tracking skills, bolt on the biggest fucking gun you can find to hit the smallest target radius you plan on blowing up, and be on your merry way.

Other than that, Yahtzee is right on the money. It's all the exact same thing as WoW, minus any sort of system that rewards you in game. The leveling system is the skill system, and basically it's designed to be a time sink.

The idea of having a role in the game (ganker, tackler, freighter, whatnot) is your basic class system. The ships are glorified armor, the weapons are... well weapons.

The only real skill needed to play the game and do so better than everyone else is whether you can understand tracking and signature radius and make it work for you. Once you get that out of the way it's just a grindfest to make ISK, a time sink to get your skills to where you want them to be so you can fly the e-penis you want, and then typical World of Whorecraft style raiding, except in PvP terms where most everybody is an asshole and acts like they're 12 years old.

I won't go into how most corporations are just like guilds, except run by nazis. Or the fact that they wants you to actually invest time into training skills in game just so you can be more effective when you want to be social and actually play with a group of people.

I  EVE. I just recently subbed, and have put 90  hours of the past week into it. heh. Found a group of experienced players in Amarr space who are starting up a corp, and I've been doing salvage runs and some light drone combat. Fun fun fun!

Yahtzee fails here. There is an insane amount of strategy in fights, just because Yahtzee doesn't want to spend the time to learn the game doesn't mean it's not fun.

and corps aren't jobs, lol, it's a misleading name if he thinks that, they're just clans or guilds....

Eve holds the record of being the only game I ever played that I actually fell asleep while playing.

Haha - let me guess, was it the constantly repeating "approaching stargate" as you travel between systems? My what a god awful waste of time that was...

Maybe it's because Yahtzee was on a 14 day trial and this elusive "strategy" the game offers is only awarded to the elitist players who have characters as old as the game is itself. You need an awful lot of advanced skills in order to even be able to use the wide range of ships and equipment which allow you to even make those strategic decisions. And those skills require an awful lot of real world time to just train. I think you need to buy the game and pay for about 12 months of service at least where all you do is log in and click a button to start training another skill and maybe a few missions to get money to buy skill books. Then you might actually be able to "have fun" playing against the elitist players who make up the rest of the player base.

As for jobs I think he's referring to the fact that a lot of those corporations are very pushy when it comes to getting you to log in and perform "work" for them like mining or patrolling their borders and what-not.
