It's not really that difficult to learn - as long as you took geometry and/or algebra in highschool you shouldn't have any problems understanding how tracking and signature radius works which is the entire basis of combat in the game. Maximize your tracking skills, bolt on the biggest fucking gun you can find to hit the smallest target radius you plan on blowing up, and be on your merry way.
Other than that, Yahtzee is right on the money. It's all the exact same thing as WoW, minus any sort of system that rewards you in game. The leveling system is the skill system, and basically it's designed to be a time sink.
The idea of having a role in the game (ganker, tackler, freighter, whatnot) is your basic class system. The ships are glorified armor, the weapons are... well weapons.
The
only real
skill needed to play the game and do so better than everyone else is whether you can understand tracking and signature radius and make it work for you. Once you get that out of the way it's just a grindfest to make ISK, a time sink to get your skills to where you want them to be so you can fly the e-penis you want, and then typical World of Whorecraft style raiding, except in PvP terms where most everybody is an asshole and acts like they're 12 years old.
I won't go into how most corporations are just like guilds, except run by nazis. Or the fact that they wants you to actually invest time into training skills in game just so you can be more effective when you want to be social and actually play with a group of people.
