YAHTT: what am i doing wrong here?

i'm trying to run audio and video from my downstairs HT upstairs as well...video is working just fine, i have a composite connection running off the monitor output on the downstairs reciever(svideo goes to the downstairs TV, composite to upstairs TV)

now, the problem... the audio...i've tried running RCA's from the preout and from the record side of the input i want audio from and i get nothing at all when the downstairs reciever is turned down, but when i turn the downstairs reciver volume up i get a faint sound upstairs, but it's extremly fuzzy and quiet

what gives? 😕

UPDATE:

yay it finally works...i got the htpc connected to the receiver through digital coaxial and used a single RCA to run digital to the upstairs reciever

now how long can i run an S-video cable?

not yet, i wanted to make sure everything was cool before i secured them

the cable is stretched across my house now 🙂

How long are these cables you're running?

about 30 feet or so...35 tops

i have about 25 feet in my car, no signal loss at all...i didn't think 30-35 feet would be that big of a difference

Does the audio work if you plug the cables directly into the source? (Like a DVD player or CD player etc.)

most likely a ground problem.

run a fiber optic up to your upstairs receiver, or get an isolation transformer

I dunno...

I haven't used my pre-outs or record outs much...

Do you have digital coax output/input you could try?

Is the sound system in the 2nd area a receiver based system or are you running to a tv set of speakers or something?

yeah the upstairs system has a reciever and seperate speakers

i have digital outs and ins on both recievers, i guess i could try to do digital transfer...i know the downstairs reciever has digital inputs, dunno about out though, i know the upstairs one has coaxial in

if the audio coming from the computer is analog will it still come out of a digital output on the reciever?

i guess i'll see if the downstairs reciever has a digital output

What pre-outs do you have them hooked up to, and are you sure you don't have to manually enable them?

the pre-outs on the downstairs reciever that's labeled preout

and i'm actually not sure if i would have to enable them manually...but i can't find a manual for the reciever online anywhere...it's a kenwood vr-4090, but the kenwood site is under construction :|

ok i get digital from the dvd player through the reciever, but not the htpc...it's connected through analog though...it has a sb live! in it, can i just get a 1/8th" to rca converter and run rca to the digital input on the reciever?

I think that should work. You may need a mono 1/8" to RCA though. I've never had to do it myself.

Does your other receiver have a phono input? It might be worth a try to hook that up to the preouts and see if you get better results from that.

yeah it does, one sec...if this doesn't work i'm gonna try to go digital

You crazy kids and your digital outputs 😛

Were you hooked up via 5.1 analog cables before... or just stereo?

I must have explained the digital only gets you stereo thing about 200 times since Feb. this year... I'm sure you know about that though.

just analog stereo...i guess i could use the 5.1 analog input on the reciever...but that would be a bitch to figure out with all the adapters and what not...it's rather difficult to get to everything in the back of my reciever without disconnecting everything and pulling it out of the cabinet 🙁

besides, the receiver does a decent job of faking it 😉

Yeah, most guys can't tell when their receiver is faking it... or am I thinking of something else?

I'm going to bed now, duuuude.

Good luck with everything.

Do you have a stereo 1/8" to dual RCA running to the reciever now? That might work as an adapter for the digital coaxial from the SB Live!, I'm not sure though. You can be my Guinea Pig 🙂

If you're tired of your receiver faking it and you want real surround sound through digital, let me know 😀

it said i was the best it ever had 🙁 *sniff*

EDIT: and yeah, i'm about to try the adapter in the digital output and see what happens...hopefully it works, since i couldn't find a mono 1/8th to RCA
