I'm looking at finally getting away from the home theater in a box systems and have been eying the Definitive Tech stuff. Anyone have any experience with them? They seem to get incredible reviews, but has anyone here listened to them first hand? I'm starting to piece together ideas now.

The system would be used for movies/music mainly. Also watching the Packers lose every Sunday. :)

Thanks in advance.

Go out and listen to some yourself. They should be pretty darn easy to find.

Bring your own source material that you're familiar with to get an idea of how they sound.

Does Def Tech make HTIB systems? I've only seen their speaker systems on their own.

EDIT: you in WI then? If so, where? ( if you don't mind answering ;) )

They do make a HTIB system called "Mythos"... but I believe it's more of a package deal on some of their speakers they sell seperately. *edit - I don't belive it has a receiver or anything like that included, just speakers/sub.

I live in Kenosha... as far south east as you can go, on the IL border and on Lake Michigan.

Ok yeah, they don't come with a receiver though, right?

What speakers are you looking at? I used to have a pair of there BP6's (I'm surprised I remembered the model! :p), and while the highs/mids sounded damned good, and they claimed the speaker to drop to 25hz (iirc), it certainly didn't sound it. Then again I wasn't expecting much from 2x5 1/4 drivers in the first place, but still. As long as you are getting a sub to go with them, they will sound very nice.

And don't skimp on the receiver, either!!! That will make almost as big of a difference as the speakers you get!

if they still sound like they used to, like bp1000,bp2000 and the like which using vifa tweeters, they are the complete opposite of Bose, jacked up highs and low. ;)

Cool. Generally HTIB implies that everything is included (in one box).

Definitive isn't bad, has a clearly distinctive sound that you should hear before buying.

Which other brands are you considering?

I haven't looked at too much yet. I just read up on their speakers and the reviews were very positive... obviously I'd have to go listen to them myself.

I'm not much of an audiophile, I have a set of Logitech Z5500's on my computer that I think sound better then most home theater systems I've heard. :p So, I certainly don't want the best of the best, or even know if I'd notice the difference. Just looking for a nice quality set of speakers that will satisfy me for a while.

No real budget... I'm in the very early stages... this is just kind of a thinking out loud post. I'll have to wait and see what happens after I get my tax refund.

*edit - I'm in need of everything. I have an old (1998ish) Panasonic HTIB system that I've never liked since the day I got it. It's basically a glorified bookshelf system with a 5 disc DVD changer that does Pro Logic. I added an ultra cheapo KLH 8" sub to it as the system alone was very lacking of the low end. The KLH sub doesn't sound perticulary good, or bad... it just adds some lows but certianly doesn't do anything exciting for me. The HTIB system has always had a 'thump' in the rear surronds when I used the built in DVD player (that only has S-vid out) but that doesn't matter any longer since it stopped reading DVD's and never worked with burned CD's in the first place. This system will end it's life in my garage eventually so I can listen to the one station that it gets.
