why are not more people leaving Houston
what they are showing on the news right now, it looks like Galveston is going to be wiped off the map like in 1900

because people 100 miles inland don't need to leave.

models have it a little more westerly this morning.

winds are also up 5 mph from last night.

But the wind field for Ike is significant.

IKE REMAINS A VERY LARGE TROPICAL CYCLONE. HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 120 MILES...195 KM...FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 275 MILES...445 KM. AN OIL PLATFORM IN THE NORTHWESTERN GULF OF MEXICO RECENTLY REPORTED SUSTAINED WINDS OF 109 MPH...176 KM/HR...AT AN ELEVATION OF 400 FEET.

if power is still out in LA two weeks after gustov, won't houston be without electric power for a few weeks following ike?

i dunno, i just have a bad feeling

It depends, but doubtful that long. We have a lot more things here that are pretty important, but it also depends on the damage.

I'm waiting it out in my apartment, so I'll throw in updates when I can.

Sustained winds for 12 hours??!??! JEsus fuck get out of there! Galveston could be under - media says. Get out fellow ATOTers! Alert your families.

FedEx said they were making deliveries today ... yet my package is not at my door yet. Screwy crap, those are expensive Dallas tickets and I can't go to the game if they don't show up.

My family decided to stay in north Houston hopefully they will be fine. I'm in College Station and supposedly it will be a Cat 1 when it gets here.

This stinks, South Louisiana and Houston are my territory for work and both are getting messed up by hurricanes. Good luck down in H-Town buddies.

I'm located 259 miles north of Galveston. I'm not too concerned yet, but if 'they' predict ~70 mph winds I'll head to a parking garage to shelter my car. Too many trees over my driveway to feel safe.

I just realized that 3 of the 5 places I lived when I lived in the Houston area will be completely underwater if the storm surge is anywhere near what is predicted.
If it tops the seawall Galveston island is basically toast as so is most of downtown Houston.

this sucks, they are saying only half the people of Galveston have evacuated, that means 25,000 people might be drowned in the next 24 hours 🙁
can't they make them leave?
25 foot surge is going to smash that 17 ft sea wall

wikipedia says the population of Galveston is 57,000
and CNN is saying only half of the city has evacuated

i dunno, maybe more are leaving now

i've been watching local houston news all morning and i haven't heard anything about half the population staying.

If 20k people remained on Galveson we are going to be talking about a pretty large loss of life if the current track and intensity continues. Do these idiots not remember what happened in Galveston last Century?

KHOU just showed people who just NOW got out of Crystal Beach. Actually, RESCUED by a Coast Guard helicopter.

^^ Co-signed, I can't believe people would be that stupid. The storm surge at landing is estimated to be from 20 to 25 feet in the worst hit areas, which will demolish Galveston.

In terms of intensity, even though Ike is only a CAT 2 and maybe CAT 3 at landfall, in terms of storm surge and size, it is the second most powerful hurricane in the last 40 years.

wunderground

If people don't get the fuck out of Galveston there is going to be a massive death toll, this is going to become one of the most costliest hurricanes ever recorded at the current rate.

There is a 10 % chance that the storm surge will reach as high as 27 to 30 feet!
