The bass output increases after some break-in. Some people leave them on for several days at high volume with bass heavy stuff to get them going.

There are some mods that you can do to them too.
The "blue tack" mod is a popular one. I don't have details on it but you should be able to search for it on headfi or other sources.

Random thread I just found: http://www5.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=55783&pp=20

Might give you some hope about what's to come :)

I've had my 280s for I think almost three years now and at this point they are either very well adjusted and sounding great or the whole psychological thing got me. :p

Definitely psychological. Pop on a pair of KSC75s and you'll see what I mean :p

In any case, though, sound quality-wise - you might think you can't tell a difference in sound quality, but after a few months of nothing but the HD280, I can almost absolutely guarantee you that going back to your old cheapie headphones will have you cringing. I'd even be willing to put money on that.

BTW, if you plan to burn in your headphones (leave them playing), make sure to only play it at a level that's slightly above the maximum volume you'll ever be playing at (definitely don't play it at a volume that will hurt your hearing). Too much volume will be detrimental to headphone drivers.

Never heard them...but what are you listening to them with? Try listening with them directly off a CD/MP3 player.

Rips of CDs, compressed to FLAC. Also trying on my CD-MP3 player. It sounds like I'm listening to $10 stereo computer speakers from 1995.

The listening was done from the passtrough built into my Logitech Z-640's, which have no volume control in them, it's just a plain passthrough, as well as my Wowthing. I apologize for the name, that's what it is. It is my headphone volume controller.

Now, I can reset the bass through the Wowthing and through nVidia's NVMixer, but it's a pain to do, because then I need to keep switching various settings when I go back to my speakers, or else neighbors all around will have to endure loud bass.

However, with most of the various bass boosts enabled, it is quite impressive. This includes changes in nVidia's equalizer, as well as use of the Wowthing's TruBass. Then it feels like it's going to shake my head up a little bit.

I've got plenty of other things to take care of tonight. Class from 8am to 4:20pm with an hour and a half break in there from 1-2:30, then work-study from 5-8:30. Mondays aren't fun days. ;) So I'll get to a better review of these sometime later. Hopefully they'll break in.

I have Goldwave, which has the ability to produce nice sine waves of a specific frequency, or "brown noise" which is like white noise, only lower in pitch, more like a huge waterfall. Anything in particular that I should have my headphones play?

Interesting side effect of having decent peripheral vision - I looked off to my side, and jumped slightly because of the big black thing right there beside my head. :)
