If one player gets tripped by another player and the ref doesn't call it, what good does it do for the player that got tripped to yell at the ref? Obviously he's not going to change his call (or lack thereof)

It could sway the ref to watch for the same call next time or could sway him to hate you...

Hockey is a very emotional game, especially around Playoff time. A Power Play goal could be the game winner. Sometimes it makes a difference, not immediately, but the refs may keep their eyes on someone.
