Flickr, Tumblr, and Yahoo Mail have to be worth a few billion, no? There are a lot of eyeballs to serve ads there.

they are, this is just pointing out the fact that their stakes in these other companies is worth more than their own worth, which basically suggests that Yahoo isn't exactly using its wealth to build much of anything...

No, what it really suggests is that the market is being stupid about the value of the rest of the companies. .

In a world where AOL still manages to exist, I don't see Yahoo ever going anywhere.

Too bad Yahoo Mail has some issues now with loading the regular view in Firefox .. it has been that way since about Apr 4, 2014 and I am not the only one with the issue. Too bad those idiot programmers can not figure it out. They had an issue about 7 months back when the new Yahoo Email came out, it was slower than a snail, but somehow it had gotten much better (just about normal loading) until Apr 4

When they first changed it a few months back, I had a LOT of problems. It would always time out just trying to open an email or change inboxes. Seems to work better now, but still not as good as it was.

I still use Yahoo mainly because of longevity. It was the first search engine I used back in the mid 90's, when people had to actually submit their website to Yahoos directories, that was how they organized the Internet. I had a small fan website for the band Porno for Pyros, at a time when the band itself didn't even have a website. I submitted it to their /music directory and had it listed as the only one for that band. But obviously after a few years that method of trying to capture the web became too cumbersome. Now I never use it for searching, only for emails.

What is Yahoo's core business, exactly. It's certainly not a search engine anymore.

Same as Google. Advertising.

Lol. Sad but true. Then again that's pretty much every website, even Anandtech.

Yahoo is kind of this weird relic of the internets past. Back when portals were all most people saw of the web. Still a very handy place to get quick info like news and that. It's like an online general interest magazine now. I know someone who works for Shine. Seems like it's still a pretty lively place to be at.

I'd laugh about the aol dial up thing, but then I'm reminded about all the schmucks that think it's a-ok for all this online required software bs when I'm visiting florida in an area that is served mostly via dialup.

Doesn't AOL own Patch newspaper? I think they also own Engadget.

And Huffington Post, Moviephone, MapQuest. They also sold a ton of patents to MS a bit ago for over $1 billion I believe.

I actually think Time Warner still technically owns them, they just operate as an independent company.
