Yahoo & MS merging IM

Betanews has word that Microsoft and Yahoo plan to link their respective IM clients again so that users of both can communicate with each other on one, shared network. Facing threats from third-party applications, like Trillian and Skype, the two tech giants will claim 44% of the instant messaging market, analysts predict. They will also go head to head together with the biggest competitor, AOL."

44%? I wonder what the breakdown is in the states, since I hardly know of anyone that uses solely MSN or Yahoo!

In Vietnam most people I knew had Yahoo e-mail and messenger. All the internet cafe comps had Yahoo installed but very few had AIM..

I use AIM the most, but still have/use Yahoo because there are a few people on there that I like to keep in contact with...

Although, they have AIM too.. hmm.

AIM isn't used in Asia cuz it doesn't support Asian characters. Bad move on their part, although their new beta version of AIM supports Asian characters.

China uses QQ and msn, taiwan and many other asian countries use msn. AIM is not used elsewhere in the world because it doesn't have the language support. AOL who? America?! burn!

Sweet! I prefer Yahoo's client over any other out there anyway.

If Microsoft does end up buying AOL I'm assuming that would eventually open up AIM as well.

No one (or very few people) in Canada use AIM.. I only know a very few people who use Yahoo.. Virtually everyone here uses MSN, perhaps not exclusively, but easily by majority. Most people either use strictly MSN, or a combo of MSN + ICQ which is much more common than the MSN + Yahoo combo, which does exist, sparcely. I'm pleased to see that more and more people are moving an MSN + Google combo around here though.. 🙂

meh, i know zero people who use yahoo messenger. only ppl i know who use google messenger are on these here forums
