Anything to make a profit.

Microsoft sends an error message to users in China who uses its search engine to search for words such as democracy, freedom, human rights, demonstration, and others.

This is interesting

I think that we all know that China will become a superpower sooner or later, they will start to lead politicaly and scientificly someday. Whats most interesting and most scary is that these limits we are seeing now will become the norm if western companies start to give in, it will just be expected that all hardware and software will have some sortof monitoring system for the government, any government to see what their citizens are doing.

This is the future if we allow it

No more yahoo for me. I won't use them for searches, mail, purchases or anything anymore.

I think it needs to be mentioned that Microsoft has agreed to filter content however they are not telling the authorities about search requests.

Yahoo and Cisco on the other hand are filitering and telling the cops about "illegal" search requests.

Just think if a drug dealer narked on "unauthrized" druggies.

I think the bigger problem is that fact that everywhere (regardless of whether or not this is China, or the USA, or Europe) is that no longer is the government accountable to the people~ rather it is something that rises ABOVE the will of the people, above its creators. Basically a type of "super state"
1984 really doesn't seem to be so odd now...just an extreme case of today. Give it another 100 years, and who knows what governments will CLAIM to have jurisdiction over.
