YAHomeTheaterAudioT: Digital Coax or Optical TOS link

for the dvd to receiver.

Right now we are using Digital Coax (some cable came with the box) and it works really good. I dont see why spending 30 bucks for a 2 feet peice of cable.

As for the sound system, I think its really good for the price i got it at (199 - 30MIR -20GC) = 150 (right now i havent sent in the MIR and Gift Cert).

I put in American Pie 2 in DTS and it sounds amazing.. and Dolby Digital is good too,but DTS is just amazing..

It sound really fscking good.. I only put in 18gauge wire (the stock 24 is quite weak)

decent cheap system.. i like it.

I doubt it matters much which one you wanna use. I bet you couldn't hear any difference.....they are both digital after all.

Where's the question? You can get s/pdif cables for $12 from Fry's. I have some and the seem to work just fine. I've never believed in all the monster-cable hype..

there is no difference, digital is digital is digital, the 100101010010101001010100101011111010101001 is going to be the same whether its transimitted with coax or tos link or carrier pigeon

except most carrier pidgeons will crap on your receiver when they get there, that's why I only use specially trained pidegons. I then have an elf that inputs the digital stream into the reaceiver, I swear the sound quality is immeasurably better now than it was before I started using pidgeons/elves.

Yes, but whether those 1s and 0s actually get there matters. Try sending the 100101010010101 message via a kid who can't remember 4 things. Ain't gonna get the same thing.

why isnt there DTS in all dvds? dts is more expensive .

Takes much more space too. On longer movies they won't be able to fit on a DTS + a few language tracks, so they go DD + languages.

Optical cables (TOSlink) have kind of fragile connectors, but they also pass no ground (sometimes no ground passed between components can be a benefit actually).

Other than that, if you want to discuss quality of cables passing digital data, read up on something called 'jitter'.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a lot of cash on an optical audio or coax digital audio cable. Optical cables can be had for $10 or so, and for digital coax just use any video quality coax. But, there is an argument for it...
