I haven't built a system in a long time. So I'm quite out of touch and need some help if anyone is willing. I use the system for internet, media, photo/video editing and processing. I don't game on it anymore because I switched to my Xbox360.
I'm poor, so I plan on dissecting pieces from my current system to use in the new one, to try to keep costs to a minimum:
2GB DDR2....I don't remember what speed or brand
EVGA 7900GT PCI-E
3 SATA HDDs
PATA DVD-RW
X-Fi XtremeMusic soundcard (provided it's worth the headache in Vista)
So with those components taken care of, what should I get within a $400 budget? I would like dual core, firewire on the mobo and case, drive-bay media reader, drive-bay hot-swappable drive, Vista Home Premium.
I'm not afraid of overclocking, but I'm not terribly concerned about it either. Any and all help is very much appreciated.
edit:
After some reading and consideration I bumped my budget a bit. It allows me to get into the p35/c2d crowd.
How does setup, combined with the above components look? I hear the Abit and E2160 overclock very well which should provide a little future proofing.

Without overclocking how would it compare to my current P4 3.2Ghz dell?
