Yet another Hurricane Katrina thread:

How long could you survive in NO in its current state....
I'd think I could manage indefinitely if I had had a couple of hours to prepare prior to the storm. Then again, I've gone camping enough times to give me much more experience than most inner city dwellers have ever experienced. (real camping - miles from the road, fend for yourself kind of stuff)
 
it wouldn?t be a factor, because unlike those morons down there i would have fvcking evacuated

Unless you wish to pee in a ditch and collect the evaporation, how would you survive without the clean water. No to indefinite, but yes to awhile, with the right equipment.

If you aren't up on all your vaccinations, you'd have no business being there. If you touched anything that got wet, you'd be at risk for some VERY nasty diseases, some of which don't have vaccinations.

1. I think that's being blown completely out of proportion.
I listened to the news, they (officials) were saying that even after the water is gone, people won't be able to return because of the risk of e-coli... it'll be in the dirt, etc. If the wind blows and dust gets picked up, people will get very sick.

To that, I reply, "bullsh!t" Go to any farm with cows. Walk by the barns. Look at the manure on the ground. Guess what - it's full of e-coli. I don't see farmers dropping dead or getting so sick they can't work on their farms.


2. As far as having fresh water to drink; perhaps some people have this misconception that you can go out to the wilderness and drink pristine water in the streams. Far from it. You can get pretty sick from untreated water there as well - many of the same types of micro-organisms are in the water.
Yet, oddly enough, boyscouts and campers have been surviving out there for years while camping and hiking. How do they do it? 1. iodine tablets. 2. various other water purification systems (reverse osmosis pumps, filters, etc.)
 
I would be a victim and I expect the government to rescue me, pay my bills, buy me clothes, and give me money. If not it's cuz they're racists who don't care about me.
