Trying to confirm something that was told to me by a salesman.

Let's say I buy a Samsung T160 receiver (accepts both Sat and OTA HD signals), I only need an "Upgradeable" HDTV and not a "Built-In" HDTV, correct?

You need an HD-Ready TV set...or, in your words "upgradable." The salesman was correct.

Wait, I thought "Ready" meant the same as "Built-in". Is it correct to assume 'Built-in" is generally only good if you have cable and/or only want OTA HD? Because either way you have to have a an HD receiver for Sat if you want SAT HD channels, right?

That is correct. If the TV has a "built-in" tuner, it's OTA (Over The Air) only. It won't be able to do DirecTV, Dish or Cable.

I have the Samsung T160 and it's great. Picks up OTA very well and has been a solid receiver.

By "Ready" they mean it can display HDTV content. It's the lines of resolution that it'll display. If it's "Built-In", they mean it also has a receiver to decode the broadcast.

So, it's redundant that I have both the T160 and a Mitsu HD built-in system (purchased both about 2 years ago). Doh!

Well yes and no. It's redundant for the OTA - which you could have been watching for 2 years! But you wouldn't have been able to watch DTV HD, so you'd have to have a DTV HD Receiver anyway. You just spent a bit more money on the front end. I've got the same setup. 55" Mitsu and Samsung T160. Great Combo!

EDIT: oops I missed the part you bought them both two years ago. I figured you only got the TV and just now got the receiver. There are some great sites out there for Home Theater (and here) if you have any other questions. www.hometheaterspot.com is my personal fav.

Not necessarily. If you want to get HD satellite signals, you'll need the external receiver, as your TV can only receive OTA signals.

But I could have gone with a HD Compatible Mitsu instead and save a few hundred bucks. I actually bought the TV before the receiver because I got a good deal.

Looking to buy another setup for the bedroom, just making sure I got all the facts before I do so. Thanks.

Yeah you could have saved the money. At least now you're asking questions and learning!

Don't get the Built in unless you plan on using an antenna for local channels and no DTV.
